1These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble.

1I have told you these things so that you won’t fall away from your faith.

2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God.

2They will kick you out of the synagogues; in fact, the time is coming when whoever kills you will think they are doing a holy service for God.

3And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

3They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me.

4But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.

4But I have told you this now so that when it happens, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you this at the beginning because I was still with you.

5But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

5Now I am going away to the one who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

6But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

6Instead, you are overcome with grief because I have told you these things.

7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.

7But I tell you the truth: it is actually better for you that I go away. If I do not go, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

8And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

8When he comes, he will prove to the world that it is wrong about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment.

9of sin, because they believe not on me;

9He will prove the world is wrong about sin, because people do not believe in me.

10of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more;

10He will prove it wrong about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me.

11of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.

11He will prove it wrong about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

12I still have many more things to tell you, but you cannot handle them right now.

13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.

13But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth. He will not speak on his own, but will tell you only what he hears, and he will tell you what is going to happen in the future.

14He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

14He will bring glory to me by taking what I have to say and revealing it to you.

15All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

15Everything the Father has belongs to me. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and reveal it to you.

16A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me.

16In a little while you won’t see me anymore, but then a little while after that, you will see me again.

17Some of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

17Some of his disciples asked each other, 'What does he mean when he says, "In a little while you won't see me, then a little while later you will see me," and "Because I am going to the Father"?'

18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith.

18They kept asking, 'What does he mean by "a little while"? We don’t understand what he’s talking about.'

19Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?

19Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about this, so he said, 'Are you asking each other what I meant when I said, "In a little while you won't see me, then a little while later you will see me"?

20Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

20I tell you the honest truth, you will weep and cry while the world is happy. You will be sad, but your sadness will turn into great joy.

21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world.

21It is like a woman giving birth; she has pain because her time has come. But after the baby is born, she forgets the pain because she is so happy that a child has been brought into the world.

22And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you.

22It is the same with you; you are sad now, but I will see you again and your hearts will be happy, and no one can take that joy away from you.

23And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.

23When that day comes, you won't need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, the Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name.

24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.

24Up until now you haven’t asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy will be complete.

25These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.

25I have used figures of speech to tell you these things. The time is coming when I won’t speak in riddles anymore, but I will tell you clearly about the Father.

26In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you;

26In 그날 you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will have to ask the Father for you,

27for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.

27because the Father himself loves you. He loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

28I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father.

28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.

29His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying.

29Then his disciples said, 'Now you are speaking clearly and not using riddles.

30Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

30Now we know that you know everything and you don't even need anyone to ask you questions. Because of this, we believe that you came from God.'

31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

31Jesus answered them, 'Do you finally believe?

32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

32Listen, the time is coming—and it is already here—when you will all be scattered and go back to your own homes, leaving me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

33I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
