1Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might quake at thy presence,
1If only you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would shake at your presence!
2as when fire kindleth the brushwood, and the fire causeth the waters to boil; to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
2Be like a fire that sets brushwood ablaze or makes water boil; come down to make your name known to your enemies, so the nations will tremble before you!
3When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains quaked at thy presence.
3When you did awesome things that we didn't expect, you came down, and the mountains shook at your presence.
4For from of old men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen a God besides thee, who worketh for him that waiteth for him.
4Since ancient times, no one has ever heard or seen any God besides you who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
5Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou wast wroth, and we sinned: in them have we been of long time; and shall we be saved?
5You welcome those who gladly do what is right and remember your ways. But you were angry because we kept on sinning; we have been in our sins for a long time. Can we be saved?
6For we are all become as one that is unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as a polluted garment: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
6All of us have become like something unclean, and even our best deeds are like filthy rags; we all wither like a leaf, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
7And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee; for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us by means of our iniquities.
7No one calls on your name or tries to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and let us waste away because of our sins.
8But now, O Jehovah, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
8But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are the potter; we are all the work of your hands.
9Be not wroth very sore, O Jehovah, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, look, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.
9Do not be so terribly angry, O LORD, and do not remember our sins forever. Please look at us, for we are all your people.
10Thy holy cities are become a wilderness, Zion is become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
10Your holy cities have become a desert; Zion has become a wilderness, and Jerusalem is a wasteland.
