1Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers that write perverseness;
1How terrible it will be for those who make unfair laws and for the officials who write cruel decrees.
2to turn aside the needy from justice, and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
2They keep the needy from getting justice and rob the poor of my people of their rights; they steal from widows and take what belongs to orphans.
3And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?
3What will you do on the day of punishment, when disaster comes from a far-away place? To whom will you run for help, and where will you hide your wealth?
4They shall only bow down under the prisoners, and shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
4There will be nothing left to do but crouch among the prisoners or fall among the dead. Even after all this, the LORD’s anger is not gone; his hand is still raised to strike.
5Ho Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, the staff in whose hand is mine indignation!
5Destruction is coming to Assyria! They are the rod I use in my anger; the club in their hand is my fury.
6I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
6I send Assyria against a godless nation; I order them to attack a people who make me angry, to take their treasures, to loot them, and to trample them down like mud in the streets.
7Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.
7But the king of Assyria does not plan to be my tool, and he does not think this way. His goal is to destroy and to wipe out many nations.
8For he saith, Are not my princes all of them kings?
8He boasts, 'Are not all of my commanders as great as kings?
9Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?
9Did I not destroy Calno just as I did Carchemish? Did I not defeat Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria now like Damascus?
10As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
10I have conquered kingdoms that worshiped idols—kingdoms whose statues were even more impressive than those in Jerusalem and Samaria.
11shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
11So, just as I destroyed Samaria and its idols, will I not do the same to Jerusalem and her images?'
12Wherefore it shall come to pass, that, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
12When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say, 'I will punish the king of Assyria for his proud heart and for the arrogant look in his eyes.'
13For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and like a valiant man I have brought down them that sit on thrones:
13For the king says, 'I have done all this by my own power and wisdom, because I am so smart. I have erased the borders of nations and stolen their treasures; like a giant, I have pulled kings down from their thrones.
14and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.
14I reached into the nations to take their wealth as easily as one takes eggs from a nest. I gathered the whole world like someone gathering abandoned eggs, and no one even flapped a wing, opened a mouth, or made a peep.'
15Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? as if a rod should wield them that lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up him that is not wood.
15Does an axe brag that it is greater than the person who swings it? Does a saw boast against the person who uses it? That would be like a rod trying to shake the person who lifts it, or a wooden staff trying to lift someone who isn't made of wood!
16Therefore will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire.
16Therefore, the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, will send a wasting disease upon the king’s well-fed warriors. Underneath all his glory, a fire will be lit like a burning flame.
17And the light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day.
17The Light of Israel will become a fire, and their Holy One will be a flame; in a single day, he will burn up the king's thorns and briars.
18And he will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and it shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth.
18The LORD will completely destroy the glory of the king's vast forests and fertile orchards, destroying him soul and body, like a sick man wasting away.
19And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child may write them.
19There will be so few trees left in his forest that even a child could count them and write them down.
20And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again lean upon him that smote them, but shall lean upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
20In that day, the few people left in Israel—those who survived from the family of Jacob—will no longer depend on the nation that attacked them. Instead, they will truly depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
21A remnant shall return, eventhe remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
21A remnant will return; the survivors of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.
22For though thy people, Israel, be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return: a destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.
22Even though your people, Israel, are as many as the sand of the sea, only a small group will return. Destruction has been decided, and it will overflow with justice.
23For a full end, and that determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth.
23For the Lord, the LORD of Heaven's Armies, will carry out the destruction he has planned throughout the whole land.
24Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian, though he smite thee with the rod, and lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
24So this is what the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, says: 'My people who live in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrians when they beat you with a rod and lift up their staff against you, just as the Egyptians did long ago.
25For yet a very little while, and the indignation against thee shall be accomplished, and mine anger shall be directed to his destruction.
25In a very short time, my anger against you will end, and I will turn my fury to their destruction.'
26And Jehovah of hosts will stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
26The LORD of Heaven’s Armies will lash them with a whip, just as he defeated Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will raise his staff over the waters, just as he did against Egypt.
27And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall depart from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed by reason of fatness.
27In that day, the heavy load they put on your shoulders will be taken away, and the yoke will be removed from your neck; the yoke will be broken because you have grown so strong.
28He is come to Aiath, he is passed through Migron; at Michmash he layeth up his baggage;
28The Assyrian army has arrived at Aiath! They have passed through Migron and stored their supplies at Michmash.
29they are gone over the pass; they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah trembleth; Gibeah of Saul is fled.
29They have crossed over the mountain pass and are staying the night at Geba. The people of Ramah are trembling with fear; the people in Saul’s town, Gibeah, have all run away.
30Cry aloud with thy voice, O daughter of Gallim! hearken, O Laishah! O thou poor Anathoth!
30Scream aloud, people of Gallim! Listen, people of Laishah! Poor Anathoth!
31Madmenah is a fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.
31The people of Madmenah are running away; the residents of Gebim are looking for a place to hide.
32This very day shall he halt at Nob: he shaketh his hand at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
32Today the enemy will stop at Nob. He shakes his fist at the mountain of Jerusalem, the hill of Zion.
33Behold, the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, will lop the boughs with terror: and the high of stature shall be hewn down, and the lofty shall be brought low.
33But look! The Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, will chop off the branches with terrifying power. The tallest trees will be cut down, and the proud will be brought low.
