What Hebrews 11:37 means

Some were stoned, some sawn apart, some tempted, others killed by the sword. Many were reduced to wearing sheepskins and goatskins, living in poverty, hardship, and mistreatment. Faith sometimes leads to martyrdom and severe deprivation. These descriptions show that the faithful were not sheltered from brutality; yet their steadfastness witnesses to the surpassing worth of God. Stripped of worldly comforts and even life, they clung to God’s promises. Their sufferings do not negate faith; they display its depth and its refusal to let go of God under the greatest pressure.

Context

The list of afflictions intensifies, moving from beatings and imprisonment to execution and extreme poverty. By cataloging such extremes, the author prepares for a divine evaluation of these sufferers in verse 38. The narrative aims to reshape readers’ expectations: faith may lead through triumphs or through trials, but in both cases God’s commendation rests on trust in him, not on outward circumstances.

v.36and others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

v.37This passage

v.38(of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth.
