What Hebrews 11:2 means

The “elders”—the faithful people of old—were commended by God because of this kind of faith. Their reputation for righteousness did not rest on flawless performance or outward success but on trusting submission to God’s promises. Heaven’s testimony about them is what matters most: God bore witness to their lives. This approval shows that faith has always been the way God’s people are counted pleasing to him. The saints of the past did not earn God’s favor; they received it as they believed and acted on his word, and their lives became enduring examples for others.

Context

After defining faith, the writer states why he is turning to the stories of Israel’s ancestors: their faith drew God’s commendation. This verse forms a bridge from the definition (verse 1) to the catalogue of examples that follows. It also underscores the main aim of the chapter—to encourage readers by pointing to a long line of men and women whom God approved because they trusted him.

v.1Now faith is assurance ofthingshoped for, a conviction of things not seen.

v.2This passage

v.3By faith we understand that the worlds have been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen hath not been made out of things which appear.
