1I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will look forth to see what he will speak with me, and what I shall answer concerning my complaint.

1I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the lookout tower. I will watch to see what God will say to me and what answer I will get regarding my complaint.

2And Jehovah answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tablets, that he may run that readeth it.

2Then the LORD answered me and said: "Write down the vision and make it clear on tablets, so that anyone who reads it can run with the message."

3For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hasteth toward the end, and shall not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not delay.

3The vision is for a specific time in the future; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Even if it seems slow, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not be late.

4Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not upright in him; but the righteous shall live by his faith.

4Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right within them, but the righteous person will live by their faithfulness.

5Yea, moreover, wine is treacherous, a haughty man, that keepeth not at home; who enlargeth his desire as Sheol, and he is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all peoples.

5Furthermore, wealth is deceptive, and the arrogant man never rests. He is as greedy as the grave; like death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself and claims all the peoples as his own.

6Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with pledges!

6Won't all these people taunt him with songs and make fun of him? They will say, 'Disaster is coming to the one who piles up stolen goods! How long will this go on? He makes himself rich by taking property as collateral!'

7Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booty unto them?

7Won't your creditors suddenly rise up? Won't they wake up and make you tremble? Then you will become their prey.

8Because thou hast plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder thee, because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein.

8Because you have looted many nations, the people who are left will loot you. This is because of the human blood you shed and the violence you did to the land, the city, and everyone living in it.

9Woe to him that getteth an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil!

9Disaster is coming to the one who builds his house through dishonest gain, trying to set his nest high up to escape the reach of ruin!

10Thou hast devised shame to thy house, by cutting off many peoples, and hast sinned against thy soul.

10You have brought shame on your own house by destroying many nations; you have forfeited your own life.

11For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

11For the very stones will cry out from the wall, and the wooden beams will echo the complaint.

12Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and establisheth a city by iniquity!

12Disaster is coming to the one who builds a city with murder and founds a town on injustice!

13Behold, is it not of Jehovah of hosts that the peoples labor for the fire, and the nations weary themselves for vanity?

13Does it not come from the LORD of Heaven’s Armies that the work of the people only becomes fuel for the fire, and nations exhaust themselves for nothing?

14For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of Jehovah, as the waters cover the sea.

14For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, just as the waters cover the sea.

15Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink, to thee that addest thy venom, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

15Disaster is coming to you who make your neighbors drink, pouring out your wine until they are drunk, just so you can stare at them in their shame!碎

16Thou art filled with shame, and not glory: drink thou also, and be as one uncircumcised; the cup of Jehovah’s right hand shall come round unto thee, and foul shame shall be upon thy glory.

16You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn to drink and expose yourself! The cup from the LORD’s right hand is coming to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

17For the violence done to Lebanon shall cover thee, and the destruction of the beasts, which made them afraid; because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein.

17The violence you did to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and the destruction you brought on the animals will terrify you. This is because of the human blood you shed and the violence you did to the land, the city, and everyone living in it.

18What profiteth the graven image, that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he that fashioneth its form trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?

18What good is an idol once it has been carved? What good is a metal image that teaches lies? For the craftsman trusts in his own creation when he makes idols that cannot even speak.

19Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise! Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

19Disaster is coming to the one who says to a piece of wood, 'Wake up!' or to a silent stone, 'Get up!' Can an idol give guidance? It is covered in gold and silver, but there is no breath in it at all.

20But Jehovah is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

20But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent in his presence.
