Genesis 29

1Then Jacob went on in his journey, and came into the east country.

1And Jacob continued his journey, and went into the land of the children of the east.

1And Jacob lifteth up his feet, and goeth towards the land of the sons of the east;

2And he saw a well in the field, and three flocks of sheep lying by it: for the beasts were watered out of it, and the mouth thereof was closed with a great stone.

2And he looked, and behold, there was a well in the fields, and behold there, three flocks of sheep were lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks, and a great stone was at the mouth of the well.

2and he looketh, and lo, a well in the field, and lo, there three droves of a flock crouching by it, for from that well they water the droves, and the great stone <FI>is<Fi> on the mouth of the well.

3And the custom was, when all the sheep were gathered together, to roll away the stone, and after the sheep were watered, to put it on the mouth of the well again.

3And when all the flocks were gathered there, they rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again on the mouth of the well in its place.

3(When thither have all the droves been gathered, and they have rolled the stone from off the mouth of the well, and have watered the flock, then they have turned back the stone on the mouth of the well to its place.)

4And he said to the shepherds: Brethren, whence are you? They answered: Of Haran.

4And Jacob said to them, My brethren, whence are ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.

4And Jacob saith to them, `My brethren, from whence <FI>are<Fi> ye?' and they say, `We <FI>are<Fi> from Haran.'

5And he asked them, saying: Know you Laban, the son of Nachor? They said: We know him.

5And he said to them, Do ye know Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We do know [him].

5And he saith to them, `Have ye known Laban, son of Nahor?' and they say, `We have known.'

6He said: Is he in health? He is in health, say they: and behold, Rachel, his daughter, cometh with his flock.

6And he said to them, Is he well? And they said, [He is] well; and behold, there comes Rachel his daughter with the sheep.

6And he saith to them, `Hath he peace?' and they say, `Peace; and lo, Rachel his daughter is coming with the flock.'

7And Jacob said: There is yet much day remaining, neither is it time to bring the flocks into the folds again: first give the sheep drink, and so lead them back to feed.

7And he said, Behold, it is yet high day; it is not time that the cattle should be gathered together; water the sheep, and go, feed [them].

7And he saith, `Lo, the day <FI>is<Fi> still great, <FI>it is<Fi> not time for the cattle to be gathered; water ye the flock, and go, delight yourselves.'

8They answered: We cannot, till all the cattle be gathered together, and we remove the stone from the well's mouth, that we may water the flocks.

8And they said, We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well, and we water the sheep.

8And they say, `We are not able, till that all the droves be gathered together, and they have rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well, and we have watered the flock.'

9They were yet speaking, and behold Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she fed the flock.

9While he was still speaking to them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

9He is yet speaking with them, and Rachel hath come with the flock which her father hath, for she <FI>is<Fi> shepherdess;

10And when Jacob saw her, and knew her to be his cousin german, and that they were the sheep of Laban, his uncle: he removed the stone wherewith the well was closed.

10And it came to pass when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep of Laban his mother's brother.

10and it cometh to pass when Jacob hath seen Rachel, daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the flock of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob cometh nigh and rolleth the stone from off the mouth of the well, and watereth the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

11And having watered the flock, he kissed her: and lifting up his voice wept.

11And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept.

11And Jacob kisseth Rachel, and lifteth up his voice, and weepeth,

12And he told her that he was her father's brother, and the son of Rebecca: but she went in haste and told her father.

12And Jacob told Rachel that he was a brother of her father, and that he was Rebecca's son; and she ran and told her father.

12and Jacob declareth to Rachel that he <FI>is<Fi> her father's brother, and that he <FI>is<Fi> Rebekah's son, and she runneth and declareth to her father.

13Who, when he heard that Jacob his sister's son was come, ran forth to meet him: and embracing him, and heartily kissing him, brought him into his house. And when he had heard the causes of his journey,

13And it came to pass when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house; and he told Laban all these things.

13And it cometh to pass, when Laban heareth the report of Jacob his sister's son, that he runneth to meet him, and embraceth him, and kisseth him, and bringeth him in unto his house; and he recounteth to Laban all these things,

14He answered: Thou art my bone and my flesh. And after the days of one month were expired,

14And Laban said to him, Thou art indeed my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him a month's time.

14and Laban saith to him, `Only my bone and my flesh <FI>art<Fi> thou;' and he dwelleth with him a month of days.

15He said to him: Because thou art my brother, shalt thou serve me without wages? Tell me what wages thou wilt have.

15And Laban said to Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou serve me for nothing? tell me, what shall be thy wages?

15And Laban saith to Jacob, `Is it because thou <FI>art<Fi> my brother that thou hast served me for nought? declare to me what <FI>is<Fi> thy hire.'

16Now he had two daughters, the name of the elder was Lia; and the younger was called Rachel.

16And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger, Rachel.

16And Laban hath two daughters, the name of the elder <FI>is<Fi> Leah, and the name of the younger Rachel,

17But Lia was blear-eyed: Rachel was well favoured, and of a beautiful countenance.

17And the eyes of Leah were tender; but Rachel was of beautiful form and beautiful countenance.

17and the eyes of Leah <FI>are<Fi> tender, and Rachel hath been fair of form and fair of appearance.

18And Jacob being in love with her, said: I will serve thee seven years for Rachel, thy younger daughter.

18And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.

18And Jacob loveth Rachel, and saith, `I serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter:'

19Laban answered: It is better that I give her to thee than to another man; stay with me.

19And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.

19and Laban saith, `It is better for me to give her to thee than to give her to another man; dwell with me;'

20So Jacob served seven years for Rachel: and they seemed but a few days, because of the greatness of his love.

20And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they were in his eyes as single days, because he loved her.

20and Jacob serveth for Rachel seven years; and they are in his eyes as some days, because of his loving her.

21And he said to Laban: Give me my wife; for now the time is fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.

21And Jacob said to Laban, Give [me] my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.

21And Jacob saith unto Laban, `Give up my wife, for my days have been fulfilled, and I go in unto her;'

22And he, having invited a great number of his friends to the feast, made the marriage.

22And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

22and Laban gathereth all the men of the place, and maketh a banquet.

23And at night he brought in Lia, his daughter, to him,

23And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in to her.

23And it cometh to pass in the evening, that he taketh Leah, his daughter, and bringeth her in unto him, and he goeth in unto her;

24Giving his daughter a handmaid, named Zelpha. Now when Jacob had gone in to her according to custom, when morning was come he saw it was Lia.

24And Laban gave to her Zilpah, his maidservant, to be maidservant to Leah his daughter.

24and Laban giveth to her Zilpah, his maid-servant, to Leah his daughter, a maid-servant.

25And he said to his father-in-law: What is it that thou didst mean to do? did not I serve thee for Rachel? why hast thou deceived me?

25And it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done to me? Have I not served thee for Rachel? Why then hast thou deceived me?

25And it cometh to pass in the morning, that lo, it <FI>is<Fi> Leah; and he saith unto Laban, `What <FI>is<Fi> this thou hast done to me? for Rachel have I not served with thee? and why hast thou deceived me?'

26Laban answered: It is not the custom in this place, to give the younger in marriage first.

26And Laban said, It is not so done in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.

26And Laban saith, `It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the first-born;

27Make up the week of days of this match: and I will give thee her also, for the service that thou shalt render me other seven years.

27Fulfil the week [with] this one: then we will give thee the other one also, for the service that thou shalt serve me yet seven other years.

27fulfil the week of this one, and we give to thee also this one, for the service which thou dost serve with me yet seven other years.'

28He yielded to his pleasure: and after the week was past, he married Rachel:

28And Jacob did so, and fulfilled the week [with] this one, and he gave him Rachel his daughter to be his wife.

28And Jacob doth so, and fulfilleth the week of this one, and he giveth to him Rachel his daughter, to him for a wife;

29To whom her father gave Bala, for her servant.

29And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, Bilhah, his maidservant, to be her maidservant.

29and Laban giveth to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his maid-servant, for a maid-servant to her.

30And having at length obtained the marriage he wished for, he preferred the love of the latter before the former, and served with him other seven years.

30And he went in also to Rachel; and he loved also Rachel more than Leah. And he served with him yet seven other years.

30And he goeth in also unto Rachel, and he also loveth Rachel more than Leah; and he serveth with him yet seven other years.

31And the Lord seeing that he despised Lia, opened her womb, but her sister remained barren.

31And when Jehovah saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

31And Jehovah seeth that Leah <FI>is<Fi> the hated one, and He openeth her womb, and Rachel <FI>is<Fi> barren;

32And she conceived and bore a son, and called his name Ruben, saying: The Lord saw my affliction: now my husband will love me.

32And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and called his name Reuben; for she said, Because Jehovah has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.

32and Leah conceiveth, and beareth a son, and calleth his name Reuben, for she said, `Because Jehovah hath looked on mine affliction; because now doth my husband love me.'

33And again she conceived and bore a son, and said: Because the Lord heard that I was despised, he hath given this also to me: and she called his name Simeon.

33And she again conceived, and bore a son, and said, Because Jehovah has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this one also; and she called his name Simeon.

33And she conceiveth again, and beareth a son, and saith, `Because Jehovah hath heard that I <FI>am<Fi> the hated one, He also giveth to me even this <FI>one<Fi> ;' and she calleth his name Simeon.

34And she conceived the third time, and bore another son, and said: Now also my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons: and therefore she called his name Levi.

34And she again conceived, and bore a son, and said, Now this time will my husband be united to me, for I have borne him three sons; therefore was his name called Levi.

34And she conceiveth again, and beareth a son, and saith, `Now <FI>is<Fi> the time, my husband is joined unto me, because I have born to him three sons,' therefore hath <FI>one<Fi> called his name Levi.

35The fourth time she conceived and bore a son, and said: Now will I praise the Lord: and for this she called him Juda. And she left bearing.

35And she again conceived, and bore a son, and said, This time will I praise Jehovah; therefore she called his name Judah. And she ceased to bear.

35And she conceiveth again, and beareth a son, and saith this time, `I praise Jehovah;' therefore hath she called his name Judah; and she ceaseth from bearing.
