1Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
1Now I say, As long as the heir is a child, he differs nothing from a bondman, though he be lord of all;
1And I say, so long time as the heir is a babe, he differeth nothing from a servant--being lord of all,
2But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
2but he is under guardians and stewards until the period fixed by the father.

3Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
3So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the principles of the world;

4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

8Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

11I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

12Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.

14And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
14and my temptation, which [was] in my flesh, ye did not slight nor reject with contempt; but ye received me as an angel ofGod, as Christ Jesus.
14and my trial that <FI>is<Fi> in my flesh ye did not despise nor reject, but as a messenger of God ye did receive me--as Christ Jesus;
15Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
15What then [was] your blessedness? for I bear you witness that, if possible, plucking out your own eyes ye would have given [them] to me.
15what then was your happiness? for I testify to you, that if possible, your eyes having plucked out, ye would have given to me;
16Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
16So I have become your enemy in speaking the truth to you?
16so that your enemy have I become, being true to you?
17They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
17They are not rightly zealous after you, but desire to shut you out [from us], that ye may be zealous after them.
17they are zealous for you--<FI> yet<Fi> not well, but they wish to shut us out, that for them ye may be zealous;
18But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
18But [it is] right to be zealous at all times in what is right, and not only when I am present with you —
18and <FI>it is<Fi> good to be zealously regarded, in what is good, at all times, and not only in my being present with you;
19My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
19my children, of whom I again travail in birth until Christ shall have been formed in you:

20I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
20and I should wish to be present with you now, and change my voice, for I am perplexed as to you.

21Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
21Tell me, ye who are desirous of being under law, do ye not listen to the law?
21Tell me, ye who are willing to be under law, the law do ye not hear?
22For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
22For it is written that Abraham had two sons; one of the maid servant, and one of the free woman.
22for it hath been written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the maid-servant, and one by the free-woman,
23But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
23But he [that was] of the maid servant was born according to flesh, and he [that was] of the free woman through the promise.
23but he who <FI>is<Fi> of the maid-servant, according to flesh hath been, and he who <FI>is<Fi> of the free-woman, through the promise;
24Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
24Which things have an allegorical sense; for these are two covenants: one from mount Sinai, gendering to bondage, which is Hagar.
24which things are allegorized, for these are the two covenants: one, indeed, from mount Sinai, to servitude bringing forth, which is Hagar;
25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
25For Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which [is] now, for she is in bondage with her children;
25for this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and doth correspond to the Jerusalem that now <FI>is<Fi> , and is in servitude with her children,
26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break out and cry, thou that travailest not; because the children of the desolate are more numerous than [those] of her that has a husband.
27for it hath been written, `Rejoice, O barren, who art not bearing; break forth and cry, thou who art not travailing, because many <FI>are<Fi> the children of the desolate--more than of her having the husband.'
28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
28But ye, brethren, after the pattern of Isaac, are children of promise.

29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
29But as then he that was born according to flesh persecuted him [that was born] according to Spirit, so also [it is] now.
29but as then he who was born according to the flesh did persecute him according to the spirit, so also now;
30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
30But what says the scripture? Cast out the maid servant and her son; for the son of the maid servant shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.
30but what saith the Writing? `Cast forth the maid-servant and her son, for the son of the maid-servant may not be heir with the son of the free-woman;'
