What Ezra 6:19 means
The returned exiles keep the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month, the appointed time. This signifies a full return to covenant life: the nation remembers deliverance from bondage and God’s redeeming power. Now that the house of God is built and dedicated, the central redemption feast is observed in its proper place. Passover recalls salvation by substitutionary blood and points forward to the greater redemption fulfilled in Christ, whom the New Testament identifies as our Passover. The community stands again under God’s saving sign, rejoicing in His faithfulness across generations.

Context
With the temple dedicated and service ordered, the people celebrate Passover at the correct time. This marks a transition from building and consecration to the lived experience of salvation remembered in festival. The next verse (20) will stress the priests’ and Levites’ purification and their service in slaughtering the Passover lambs for all. Verse 21 will widen the circle to include those who have separated themselves from the nations’ uncleanness to seek Jehovah, forming a purified, seeking community.
v.18And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.
v.19This passage
v.20For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; all of them were pure: and they killed the passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves.
