1And the Lord spoke all these words:

1And God said all these words:

2I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

2I am the Lord your God who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the prison-house.

3Thou shalt not have strange gods before me.

3You are to have no other gods but me.

4Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, nor of those things that are in the waters under the earth.

4You are not to make an image or picture of anything in heaven or on the earth or in the waters under the earth:

5Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me:

5You may not go down on your faces before them or give them worship: for I, the Lord your God, am a God who will not give his honour to another; and I will send punishment on the children for the wrongdoing of their fathers, to the third and fourth generation of my haters;

6And shewing mercy unto thousands to them that love me, and keep my commandments.

6And I will have mercy through a thousand generations on those who have love for me and keep my laws.

7Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that shall take the name of the Lord his God in vain.

7You are not to make use of the name of the Lord your God for an evil purpose; whoever takes the Lord's name on his lips for an evil purpose will be judged a sinner by the Lord

8Remember that thou keep holy the sabbath day.

8Keep in memory the Sabbath and let it be a holy day.

9Six days shalt thou labour, and shalt do all thy works.

9On six days do all your work:

10But on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work on it, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy beast, nor the stranger that is within thy gates.

10But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on that day you are to do no work, you or your son or your daughter, your man-servant or your woman-servant, your cattle or the man from a strange country who is living among you:

11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them, and rested on the seventh day: therefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.

11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and everything in them, and he took his rest on the seventh day: for this reason the Lord has given his blessing to the seventh day and made it holy.

12Honour thy father and thy mother, that thou mayst be longlived upon the land which the Lord thy God will give thee.

12Give honour to your father and to your mother, so that your life may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

13Thou shalt not kill.

13Do not put anyone to death without cause.

14Thou shalt not commit adultery.

14Do not be false to the married relation.

15Thou shalt not steal.

15Do not take the property of another.

16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

16Do not give false witness against your neighbour.

17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; neither shalt thou desire his wife, nor his servant, nor his handmaid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his.

17Let not your desire be turned to your neighbour's house, or his wife or his man-servant or his woman-servant or his ox or his ass or anything which is his.

18And all the people saw the voices and the flames, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mount smoking; and being terrified and struck with fear, they stood afar off,

18And all the people were watching the thunderings and the flames and the sound of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when they saw it, they kept far off, shaking with fear.

19Saying to Moses: Speak thou to us, and we will hear: let not the Lord speak to us, lest we die.

19And they said to Moses, To your words we will give ear, but let not the voice of God come to our ears, for fear death may come on us.

20And Moses said to the people: Fear not; for God is come to prove you, and that the dread of him might be in you, and you should not sin.

20And Moses said to the people, Have no fear: for God has come to put you to the test, so that fearing him you may be kept from sin.

21And the people stood afar off. But Moses went to the dark cloud wherein God was.

21And the people kept their places far off, but Moses went near to the dark cloud where God was.

22And the Lord said to Moses: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.

22And the Lord said to Moses, Say to the children of Israel, You yourselves have seen that my voice has come to you from heaven

23You shall not make gods of silver, nor shall you make to yourselves gods of gold.

23Gods of silver and gods of gold you are not to make for yourselves.

24You shall make an altar of earth unto me, and you shall offer upon it your holocausts and peace offerings, your sheep and oxen, in every place where the memory of my name shall be: I will come to thee, and will bless thee.

24Make for me an altar of earth, offering on it your burned offerings and your peace-offerings, your sheep and your oxen: in every place where I have put the memory of my name, I will come to you and give you my blessing.

25And if thou make an altar of stone unto me, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if thou lift up a tool upon it, it shall be defiled.

25And if you make me an altar of stone do not make it of cut stones: for the touch of an instrument will make it unclean.

26Thou shalt not go up by steps unto my altar, lest thy nakedness be discovered.

26And do not go up by steps to my altar, for fear that your bodies may be seen uncovered.
