Exodus 20

1And God said all these words:

1AndGod spoke all these words, saying,

2I am the Lord your God who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the prison-house.

2I am Jehovah thyGod, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3You are to have no other gods but me.

3Thou shalt have no othergods before me.

4You are not to make an image or picture of anything in heaven or on the earth or in the waters under the earth:

4Thou shalt not make thyself any graven image, or any form of what is in the heavens above, or what is in the earth beneath, or what is in the waters under the earth:

5You may not go down on your faces before them or give them worship: for I, the Lord your God, am a God who will not give his honour to another; and I will send punishment on the children for the wrongdoing of their fathers, to the third and fourth generation of my haters;

5thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I, Jehovah thyGod, am a jealousGod, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and to the fourth [generation] of them that hate me,

6And I will have mercy through a thousand generations on those who have love for me and keep my laws.

6and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

7You are not to make use of the name of the Lord your God for an evil purpose; whoever takes the Lord's name on his lips for an evil purpose will be judged a sinner by the Lord

7Thou shalt not idly utter the name of Jehovah thyGod; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that idly uttereth his name.

8Keep in memory the Sabbath and let it be a holy day.

8Remember the sabbath day to hallow it.

9On six days do all your work:

9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;

10But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on that day you are to do no work, you or your son or your daughter, your man-servant or your woman-servant, your cattle or the man from a strange country who is living among you:

10but the seventh day is the sabbath of Jehovah thyGod: thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy bondman, nor thy handmaid, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.

11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and everything in them, and he took his rest on the seventh day: for this reason the Lord has given his blessing to the seventh day and made it holy.

11For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12Give honour to your father and to your mother, so that your life may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

12Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be prolonged in the land that Jehovah thyGod giveth thee.

13Do not put anyone to death without cause.

13Thou shalt not kill.

14Do not be false to the married relation.

14Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15Do not take the property of another.

15Thou shalt not steal.

16Do not give false witness against your neighbour.

16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17Let not your desire be turned to your neighbour's house, or his wife or his man-servant or his woman-servant or his ox or his ass or anything which is his.

17Thou shalt not desire thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not desire thy neighbour's wife, nor his bondman, nor his handmaid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.

18And all the people were watching the thunderings and the flames and the sound of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when they saw it, they kept far off, shaking with fear.

18And all the people saw the thunderings, and the flames, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw [it], they trembled, and stood afar off,

19And they said to Moses, To your words we will give ear, but let not the voice of God come to our ears, for fear death may come on us.

19and said to Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let notGod speak with us, lest we die.

20And Moses said to the people, Have no fear: for God has come to put you to the test, so that fearing him you may be kept from sin.

20And Moses said to the people, Fear not; forGod is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not.

21And the people kept their places far off, but Moses went near to the dark cloud where God was.

21And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near to the obscurity whereGod was.

22And the Lord said to Moses, Say to the children of Israel, You yourselves have seen that my voice has come to you from heaven

22And Jehovah said to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: Ye have seen that I have spoken with you from the heavens.

23Gods of silver and gods of gold you are not to make for yourselves.

23Ye shall not make beside megods of silver, and ye shall not make to yougods of gold.

24Make for me an altar of earth, offering on it your burned offerings and your peace-offerings, your sheep and your oxen: in every place where I have put the memory of my name, I will come to you and give you my blessing.

24An altar of earth shalt thou make unto me, and shalt sacrifice on it thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep and thine oxen: in all places where I shall make my name to be remembered, I will come unto thee, and bless thee.

25And if you make me an altar of stone do not make it of cut stones: for the touch of an instrument will make it unclean.

25And if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone; for if thou lift up thy sharp tool upon it, thou hast profaned it.

26And do not go up by steps to my altar, for fear that your bodies may be seen uncovered.

26Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
