1And God spake all these words, saying,

1Then God spoke all these words:

2I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

2“I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the place where you were slaves.

3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

3“You must not have any other gods except me.

4Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

4“You must not make for yourself an idol or any image of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth.

5thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me,

5“You must not bow down to them or worship them; for I, Jehovah your God, am a jealous God. I punish the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me.

6and showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

6“But I show faithful love to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commands.

7Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

7“You must not misuse the name of Jehovah your God, for Jehovah will not let anyone go unpunished who misuses his name.

8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

8“Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy.

9Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;

9“You have six days to labor and do all your work,

10but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

10“but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Jehovah your God. On that day you must not do any work—not you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the foreigner living in your towns.

11for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

11“For in six days Jehovah made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore Jehovah blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

12“Honor your father and your mother so that you may live a long time in the land Jehovah your God is giving you.

13Thou shalt not kill.

13“You must not murder.

14Thou shalt not commit adultery.

14“You must not commit adultery.

15Thou shalt not steal.

15“You must not steal.

16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

16“You must not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.

17“You must not desire to take your neighbor’s house. You must not desire your neighbor’s wife, his male or female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”

18And all the people perceived the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the voice of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off.

18When all the people saw the lightning and the mountain smoking, and heard the thunder and the blast of the trumpet, they trembled with fear and stayed at a distance.

19And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

19They said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”

20And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not.

20Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning.”

21And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

21The people kept their distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

22And Jehovah said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

22Then Jehovah said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.

23Ye shall not make other gods with me; gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto you.

23“‘Do not make any gods of silver or gold to rival me.

24An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in every place where I record my name I will come unto thee and I will bless thee.

24“‘Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice your burnt offerings, your peace offerings, your sheep, and your cattle on it. In every place where I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you.

25And if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

25“‘If you make an altar of stone for me, do not build it with cut stones. If you use a tool on it, you will make it unfit for holy use.

26Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not uncovered thereon.

26“‘And do not go up to my altar on steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed on it.’”
