What Esther 9:6 means
In the imperial center, Shushan the palace, the Jews kill five hundred men. Recording the number grounds the narrative in concrete terms and signals that opposition in the capital was significant but not insurmountable. The palace city had been the stage of Haman’s rise and decree; now it becomes the scene of his party’s undoing. The figure suggests organized resistance against the Jews persisted even where royal authority was strongest, yet the Jews prevailed under the protection of the counter-decree and the favor surrounding Mordecai. The capital’s outcome reassures Jews across the provinces: if safety stands here, it can stand anywhere.

Context
Verse 6 narrows the focus to Shushan the palace, the symbolic heart of power. It sets up the listing of Haman’s ten sons in verses 7–10, linking the defeat in the capital to the deliberate dismantling of Haman’s line. After the tally is reported to the king in verse 11, his dialogue with Esther (vv. 12–13) leads to a second day of authorized action in Shushan. Thus the capital city becomes both the proving ground and the public display of the reversal that is sweeping the empire.
