1I then, the prisoner in the Lord, make this request from my heart, that you will see that your behaviour is a credit to the position which God's purpose has given you,
1Call upon you, then, do I--the prisoner of the Lord--to walk worthily of the calling with which ye were called,
1I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called:
1I, the prisoner in [the] Lord, exhort you therefore to walk worthy of the calling wherewith ye have been called,
2With all gentle and quiet behaviour, taking whatever comes, putting up with one another in love;
2with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love,
2With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity.
2with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love;
3Taking care to keep the harmony of the Spirit in the yoke of peace.
3being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of the peace;
3Careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
3using diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the uniting bond of peace.
4There is one body and one Spirit, even as you have been marked out by God in the one hope of his purpose for you;
4one body and one Spirit, according as also ye were called in one hope of your calling;
4One body and one Spirit: as you are called in one hope of your calling.
4[There is] one body and one Spirit, as ye have been also called in one hope of your calling;
5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
5one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
5One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
5one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
6One God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all.
6one God and Father of all, who <FI>is<Fi> over all, and through all, and in you all,
6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all.
6oneGod and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.
7But to every one of us has grace been given in the measure of the giving of Christ.
7and to each one of you was given the grace, according to the measure of the gift of Christ,
7But to every one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the giving of Christ.
7But to each one of us has been given grace according to the measure of the gift of the Christ.
8For this reason he says, He went up on high, taking his prisoners with him, and gave freely to men.
8wherefore, he saith, `Having gone up on high he led captive captivity, and gave gifts to men,' --
8Wherefore he saith: Ascending on high, he led captivity captive: he gave gifts to men.
8Wherefore he says, Having ascended up on high, he has led captivity captive, and has given gifts to men.
9(Now this, He went up, what is it but that he first went down into the lower parts of the earth?
9and that, he went up, what is it except that he also went down first to the lower parts of the earth?
9Now that he ascended, what is it, but because he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
9But that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10He who went down is the same who went up far over all the heavens so that he might make all things complete.)
10he who went down is the same also who went up far above all the heavens, that He may fill all things--
10He that descended is the same also that ascended above all the heavens: that he might fill all things.
10He that descended is the same who has also ascended up above all the heavens, that he might fill all things;
11And he gave some as Apostles, and some, prophets; and some, preachers of the good news; and some to give care and teaching;
11and He gave some <FI>as<Fi> apostles, and some <FI>as<Fi> prophets, and some <FI>as<Fi> proclaimers of good news, and some <FI>as<Fi> shepherds and teachers,
11And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and other some evangelists, and other some pastors and doctors:
11and he has given some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some shepherds and teachers,
12For the training of the saints as servants in the church, for the building up of the body of Christ:
12unto the perfecting of the saints, for a work of ministration, for a building up of the body of the Christ,
12For the perfecting of the saints, for the word of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
12for the perfecting of the saints; with a view to [the] work of [the] ministry, with a view to the edifying of the body of Christ;
13Till we all come to the harmony of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to full growth, to the full measure of Christ:
13till we may all come to the unity of the faith and of the recognition of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to a measure of stature of the fulness of the Christ,
13Until we all meet into the unity of faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fulness of Christ:
13until we all arrive at the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son ofGod, at [the] full-grown man, at [the] measure of the stature of the fulness of the Christ;
14So that we may be no longer children, sent this way and that, turned about by every wind of teaching, by the twisting and tricks of men, by the deceits of error;
14that we may no more be babes, tossed and borne about by every wind of the teaching, in the sleight of men, in craftiness, unto the artifice of leading astray,
14That henceforth we be no more children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men, by cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive.
14in order that we may be no longer babes, tossed and carried about by every wind of that teaching [which is] in the sleight of men, in unprincipled cunning with a view to systematized error;
15But saying true words in love, may come to full growth in him, who is the head, even Christ;
15and, being true in love, we may increase to Him <FI>in<Fi> all things, who is the head--the Christ;
15But doing the truth in charity, we may in all things grow up in him who is the head, even Christ:
15but, holding the truth in love, we may grow up to him in all things, who is the head, the Christ:
16Through whom all the body, being rightly formed and united together, by the full working of every part, is increased to the building up of itself in love.
16from whom the whole body, being fitly joined together and united, through the supply of every joint, according to the working in the measure of each single part, the increase of the body doth make for the building up of itself in love.
16From whom the whole body, being compacted and fitly joined together, by what every joint supplieth, according to the operation in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body, unto the edifying of itself in charity.
16from whom the whole body, fitted together, and connected by every joint of supply, according to [the] working in [its] measure of each one part, works for itself the increase of the body to its self-building up in love.
17This I say, then, and give witness in the Lord, that you are to go no longer in the way of the Gentiles whose minds are turned to that which has no profit,
17This, then, I say, and I testify in the Lord; ye are no more to walk, as also the other nations walk, in the vanity of their mind,
17This then I say and testify in the Lord: That henceforward you walk not as also the Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind:
17This I say therefore, and testify in [the] Lord, that ye should no longer walk as [the rest of] the nations walk in [the] vanity of their mind,
18Whose thoughts are dark, to whom the life of God is strange because they are without knowledge, and their hearts have been made hard;
18being darkened in the understanding, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart,
18Having their understanding darkened: being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their hearts.
18being darkened in understanding, estranged from the life ofGod by reason of the ignorance which is in them, by reason of the hardness of their hearts,
19Who having no more power of feeling, have given themselves up to evil passions, to do all unclean things with overmuch desire.
19who, having ceased to feel, themselves did give up to the lasciviousness, for the working of all uncleanness in greediness;
19Who despairing have given themselves up to lasciviousness, unto the working of all uncleanness, unto covetousness.
19who having cast off all feeling, have given themselves up to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greedy unsatisfied lust.
20For this was not the teaching of Christ which was given to you;
20and ye did not so learn the Christ,
20But you have not so learned Christ:
20But ye have not thus learnt the Christ,
21If in fact you gave ear to him, and were given teaching in him, even as what is true is made clear in Jesus:
21if so be ye did hear him, and in him were taught, as truth is in Jesus;
21If so be that you have heard him and have been taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus:
21if ye have heard him and been instructed in him according as [the] truth is in Jesus;
22That you are to put away, in relation to your earlier way of life, the old man, which has become evil by love of deceit;
22ye are to put off concerning the former behaviour the old man, that is corrupt according to the desires of the deceit,
22To put off, according to former conversation, the old man, who is corrupted according to the desire of error.
22[namely] your having put off according to the former conversation the old man which corrupts itself according to the deceitful lusts;
23And be made new in the spirit of your mind,
23and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
23And be renewed in spirit of your mind:
23and being renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24And put on the new man, to which God has given life, in righteousness and a true and holy way of living.
24and to put on the new man, which, according to God, was created in righteousness and kindness of the truth.
24And put on the new man, who according to God is created in justice and holiness of truth.
24and [your] having put on the new man, which according toGod is created in truthful righteousness and holiness.
25And so, putting away false words, let everyone say what is true to his neighbour: for we are parts one of another.
25Wherefore, putting away the lying, speak truth each with his neighbour, because we are members one of another;
25Wherefore, putting away lying, speak ye the truth, every man with his neighbour. For we are members one of another.
25Wherefore, having put off falsehood, speak truth every one with his neighbour, because we are members one of another.
26Be angry without doing wrong; let not the sun go down on your wrath;
26be angry and do not sin; let not the sun go down upon your wrath,
26Be angry: and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your anger.
26Be angry, and do not sin; let not the sun set upon your wrath,
27And do not give way to the Evil One.
27neither give place to the devil;
27Give not place to the devil.
27neither give room for the devil.
28Let him who was a thief be so no longer, but let him do good work with his hands, so that he may have something to give to him who is in need.
28whoso is stealing let him no more steal, but rather let him labour, working the thing that is good with the hands, that he may have to impart to him having need.
28He that stole, let him now steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have something to give to him that suffereth need.
28Let the stealer steal no more, but rather let him toil, working what is honest with [his] hands, that he may have to distribute to him that has need.
29Let no evil talk come out of your mouth, but only what is good for giving necessary teaching, and for grace to those who give ear.
29Let no corrupt word out of your mouth go forth, but what is good unto the needful building up, that it may give grace to the hearers;
29Let no evil speech proceed from your mouth: but that which is good, to the edification of faith: that it may administer grace to the hearers.
29Let no corrupt word go out of your mouth, but if [there be] any good one for needful edification, that it may give grace to those that hear [it].
30And do not give grief to the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were marked for the day of salvation.
30and make not sorrowful the Holy Spirit of God, in which ye were sealed to a day of redemption.
30And grieve not the holy Spirit of God: whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption.
30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit ofGod, with which ye have been sealed for [the] day of redemption.
31Let all bitter, sharp and angry feeling, and noise, and evil words, be put away from you, with all unkind acts;
31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil-speaking, be put away from you, with all malice,
31Let all bitterness and anger and indignation and clamour and blasphemy be put away from you, with all malice.
31Let all bitterness, and heat of passion, and wrath, and clamour, and injurious language, be removed from you, with all malice;
32And be kind to one another, full of pity, having forgiveness for one another, even as God in Christ had forgiveness for you.
32and become one to another kind, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, according as also God in Christ did forgive you.
32And be ye kind one to another: merciful, forgiving one another, even as God hath forgiven you in Christ.
32and be to one another kind, compassionate, forgiving one another, so asGod also in Christ has forgiven you.
