Acts 18

1And after these things, Paul having departed out of Athens, came to Corinth,

2and having found a certain Jew, by name Aquilas, of Pontus by birth, lately come from Italy, and Priscilla his wife--because of Claudius having directed all the Jews to depart out of Rome--he came to them,

2and finding a certain Jew by name Aquila, of Pontus by race, just come from Italy, and Priscilla his wife, (because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome,) came to them,

2And there he came across a certain Jew named Aquila, a man of Pontus by birth, who not long before had come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had given orders that all Jews were to go away from Rome: and he came to them;

3and because of being of the same craft, he did remain with them, and was working, for they were tent-makers as to craft;

3and because they were of the same trade abode with them, and wrought. For they were tent-makers by trade.

3And because he was of the same trade, he was living with them, and they did their work together; for by trade they were tent-makers.

4and he was reasoning in the synagogue every sabbath, persuading both Jews and Greeks.

4And every Sabbath he had discussions in the Synagogue, turning Jews and Greeks to the faith.

5And when both Silas and Timotheus came down from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the Spirit, testifying fully to the Jews Jesus the Christ;

5And when both Silas and Timotheus came down from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in respect of the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

5And when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was completely given up to the word, preaching to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus.

6and on their resisting and speaking evil, having shaken <FI>his<Fi> garments, he said unto them, `Your blood <FI>is<Fi> upon your head--I am clean; henceforth to the nations I will go on.'

6But as they opposed and spoke injuriously, he shook his clothes, and said to them, Your blood be upon your own head: I [am] pure; from henceforth I will go to the nations.

6And when they put themselves against him, and said evil words, he said, shaking his clothing, Your blood be on your heads, I am clean: from now I will go to the Gentiles.

7And having departed thence, he went to the house of a certain one, by name Justus, a worshipper of God, whose house was adjoining the synagogue,

7And moving from there, he went into the house of a man named Titus Justus, a God-fearing man, whose house was very near the Synagogue.

8and Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue did believe in the Lord with all his house, and many of the Corinthians hearing were believing, and they were being baptized.

8But Crispus the ruler of the synagogue believed in the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing, believed, and were baptised.

8And Crispus, the ruler of the Synagogue, with all his family, had faith in the Lord; and a great number of the people of Corinth, hearing the word, had faith and were given baptism.

9And the Lord said through a vision in the night to Paul, `Be not afraid, but be speaking and thou mayest be not silent;

9And the Lord said by vision in [the] night to Paul, Fear not, but speak and be not silent;

9And the Lord said to Paul in the night, in a vision, Have no fear and go on preaching:

10because I am with thee, and no one shall set on thee to do thee evil; because I have much people in this city;'

10because I am with thee, and no one shall set upon thee to injure thee; because I have much people in this city.

10For I am with you, and no one will make an attack on you to do you damage: for I have a number of people in this town.

11and he continued a year and six months, teaching among them the word of God.

12And Gallio being proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a rush with one accord upon Paul, and brought him unto the tribunal,

12But when Gallio was ruler of Achaia, all the Jews together made an attack on Paul, and took him to the judge's seat,

13saying--`Against the law this one doth persuade men to worship God;'

13saying, This [man] persuades men to worshipGod contrary to the law.

13Saying, This man is teaching the people to give worship to God in a way which is against the law.

14and Paul being about to open <FI>his<Fi> mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, `If, indeed, then, it was anything unrighteous, or an act of wicked profligacy, O Jews, according to reason I had borne with you,

14But as Paul was going to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, If indeed it was some wrong or wicked criminality, O Jews, of reason I should have borne with you;

14But when Paul was about to say something, Gallio said to the Jews, If this was anything to do with wrongdoing or crime, there would be a reason for me to give you a hearing:

15but if it is a question concerning words and names, and of your law, look ye yourselves <FI>to it<Fi> , for a judge of these things I do not wish to be,'

15but if it be questions about words, and names, and the law that ye have, see to it yourselves; [for] I do not intend to be judge of these things.

15But if it is a question of words or names or of your law, see to it yourselves; I will not be a judge of such things.

16and he drave them from the tribunal;

16And he drove them from the judgment-seat.

16And he sent them away from the judge's seat.

17and all the Greeks having taken Sosthenes, the chief man of the synagogue, were beating <FI>him<Fi> before the tribunal, and not even for these things was Gallio caring.

17And having all laid hold on Sosthenes the ruler of the synagogue, they beat him before the judgment-seat. And Gallio troubled himself about none of these things.

17And they all made an attack on Sosthenes, the ruler of the Synagogue, and gave him blows before the judge's seat; but Gallio gave no attention to these things.

18And Paul having remained yet a good many days, having taken leave of the brethren, was sailing to Syria--and with him <FI>are<Fi> Priscilla and Aquilas--having shorn <FI>his<Fi> head in Cenchera, for he had a vow;

18And Paul, having yet stayed [there] many days, took leave of the brethren and sailed thence to Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila, having shorn his head in Cenchrea, for he had a vow;

18And Paul, after waiting some days, went away from the brothers and went by ship to Syria, Priscilla and Aquila being with him; and he had had his hair cut off in Cenchrea, for he had taken an oath.

19and he came down to Ephesus, and did leave them there, and he himself having entered into the synagogue did reason with the Jews:

19and he arrived at Ephesus, and left them there. But entering himself into the synagogue he reasoned with the Jews.

19And they came down to Ephesus and he left them there: and he himself went into the Synagogue and had a discussion with the Jews.

20and they having requested <FI>him<Fi> to remain a longer time with them, he did not consent,

20And when they asked him that he would remain for a longer time [with them] he did not accede,

20And being requested by them to be there for a longer time, he said, No;

21but took leave of them, saying, `It behoveth me by all means the coming feast to keep at Jerusalem, and again I will return unto you--God willing.' And he sailed from Ephesus,

21but bade them farewell, saying, [I must by all means keep the coming feast at Jerusalem]; I will return to you again, ifGod will: and he sailed away from Ephesus.

21And went from them, saying, I will come back to you if God lets me; and he took ship from Ephesus.

22and having come down to Caesarea, having gone up, and having saluted the assembly, he went down to Antioch.

22And landing at Caesarea, and having gone up and saluted the assembly, he went down to Antioch.

22And when he had come to land at Caesarea, he went to see the church, and then went down to Antioch.

23And having made some stay he went forth, going through in order the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

23And having stayed [there] some time, he went forth, passing in order through the country of Galatia and Phrygia, establishing all the disciples.

23And having been there for some time, he went through the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, making the disciples strong in the faith.

24And a certain Jew, Apollos by name, an Alexandrian by birth, a man of eloquence, being mighty in the Writings, came to Ephesus,

24But a certain Jew, Apollos by name, an Alexandrian by race, an eloquent man, who was mighty in the scriptures, arrived at Ephesus.

24Now a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, and a man of learning, came to Ephesus; and he had great knowledge of the holy Writings.

25this one was instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in the Spirit, was speaking and teaching exactly the things about the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John;

25He was instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in his spirit, he spoke and taught exactly the things concerning Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John.

25This man had been trained in the way of the Lord; and burning in spirit, he gave himself up to teaching the facts about Jesus, though he had knowledge only of John's baptism:

26this one also began to speak boldly in the synagogue, and Aquilas and Priscilla having heard of him, took him to <FI>them<Fi> , and did more exactly expound to him the way of God,

26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. And Aquila and Priscilla, having heard him, took him to [them] and unfolded to him the way ofGod more exactly.

26And he was preaching in the Synagogue without fear. But Priscilla and Aquila, hearing his words, took him in, and gave him fuller teaching about the way of God.

27and he being minded to go through into Achaia, the brethren wrote to the disciples, having exhorted them to receive him, who having come, did help them much who have believed through the grace,

27And when he purposed to go into Achaia, the brethren wrote to the disciples engaging them to receive him, who, being come, contributed much to those who believed through grace.

27And when he had a desire to go over into Achaia, the brothers gave him help, and sent letters to the disciples requesting them to take him in among them: and when he had come, he gave much help to those who had faith through grace:

28for powerfully the Jews he was refuting publicly, shewing through the Writings Jesus to be the Christ.

28For he with great force convinced the Jews publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

28For he overcame the Jews in public discussion, making clear from the holy Writings that the Christ was Jesus.
