1My desire is, first of all, that you will make requests and prayers and give praise for all men;
1I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings be made for all men;
1I desire therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all men:
1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2For kings and all those in authority; so that we may have a calm and quiet life in all fear of God and serious behaviour.
2for kings and all that are in dignity, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all piety and gravity;
2For kings and for all that are in high station: that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life in all piety and chastity.
2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
3This is good and pleasing in the eyes of God our Saviour;
3for this is good and acceptable before our SaviourGod,
3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour,
3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4Whose desire is that all men may have salvation and come to the knowledge of what is true.
4who desires that all men should be saved and come to [the] knowledge of [the] truth.
4Who will have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
5For there is one God and one peacemaker between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
5ForGod is one, and [the] mediator ofGod and men one, [the] man Christ Jesus,
5For there is one God: and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus:
5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
6Who gave himself as an offering for all; witness of which was to be given at the right time;
6who gave himself a ransom for all, the testimony [to be rendered] in its own times;
6Who gave himself a redemption for all, a testimony in due times.
6Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
7And of this I became a preacher and an Apostle (what I say is true, not false,) and a teacher of the Gentiles in the true faith.
7to which I have been appointed a herald and apostle, (I speak [the] truth, I do not lie,) a teacher of [the] nations in faith and truth.
7Whereunto I am appointed a preacher and an apostle (I say the truth, I lie not), a doctor of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
7Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
8It is my desire, then, that in every place men may give themselves to prayer, lifting up holy hands, without wrath or argument.
8I will therefore that the men pray in every place, lifting up pious hands, without wrath or reasoning.
8I will therefore that men pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger and contention.
8I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
9And that women may be dressed in simple clothing, with a quiet and serious air; not with twisted hair and gold or jewels or robes of great price;
9In like manner also that the women in decent deportment and dress adorn themselves with modesty and discretion, not with plaited [hair] and gold, or pearls, or costly clothing,
9In like manner, women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire:
9In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10But clothed with good works, as is right for women who are living in the fear of God.
10but, what becomes women making profession of the fear ofGod, by good works.
10But, as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works.
10But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
11Let a woman quietly take the place of a learner and be under authority.
11Let a woman learn in quietness in all subjection;
11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12In my opinion it is right for a woman not to be a teacher, or to have rule over a man, but to be quiet.
12but I do not suffer a woman to teach nor to exercise authority over man, but to be in quietness;
12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to use authority over the man: but to be in silence.
12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13For Adam was first formed, then Eve;
13for Adam was formed first, then Eve:
13For Adam was first formed; then Eve.
13For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14And Adam was not taken by deceit, but the woman, being tricked, became a wrongdoer.
14and Adam was not deceived; but the woman, having been deceived, was in transgression.
14And Adam was not seduced; but the woman, being seduced, was in the transgression.
14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
15But if they go on in faith and love and holy self-control, she will be kept safe at the time of childbirth.
15But she shall be preserved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and love and holiness with discretion.
15Yet she shall be saved through child bearing; if she continue in faith and love and sanctification with sobriety.
15Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
