1But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you.

1Now, brothers and sisters, we don't need to write to you about the specific times or dates when these things will happen.

2For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

2You know very well that the day the Lord returns will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the middle of the night.

3When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.

3When people are saying, 'Everything is peaceful and secure,' disaster will strike them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape.

4But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief:

4But you, brothers and sisters, are not living in the dark, so that day should not surprise you like a thief.

5for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness;

5For you are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

6so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober.

6So then, let us not be like others who are asleep, but let us stay awake and keep a clear head.

7For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night.

7People who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.

8But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

8But since we belong to the day, let us stay sober. Let us put on faith and love as our armor, and use the hope of salvation as our helmet.

9For God appointed us not unto wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

9For God did not choose us to suffer his anger, but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

10who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

10He died for us so that, whether we are still alive or have died by the time he comes, we can live together with him.

11Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do.

11So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

12But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

12Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who work hard among you, who lead you in the Lord and teach you.

13and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

13Think highly of them and love them because of the work they do. And live in peace with each other.

14And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all.

14We urge you, brothers and sisters, to warn those who are lazy, encourage those who are timid, help those who are weak, and be patient with everyone.

15See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all.

15Make sure that leafy nobody pays back evil for evil. Instead, always try to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.

16Rejoice always;

16Always be joyful.

17pray without ceasing;

17Never stop praying.

18in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward.

18Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is what God wants for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

19Quench not the Spirit;

19Do not put out the Spirit's fire.

20despise not prophesyings;

20Do not look down on prophecies.

21prove all things; hold fast that which is good;

21Test everything. Hold on to what is good.

22abstain from every form of evil.

22Stay away from every kind of evil.

23And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

23May the God of peace himself make you holy in every way. May your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

24Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it.

24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will make this happen.

25Brethren, pray for us.

25Brothers and sisters, pray for us.

26Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss.

26Greet all the believers with a holy kiss.

27I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the brethren.

27I command you in the name of the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.

28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

28May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
