1I who am myself one of the rulers of the church, and a witness of the death of Christ, having my part in the coming glory, send this serious request to the chief men among you:
1Elders who <FI>are<Fi> among you, I exhort, who <FI>am<Fi> a fellow-elder, and a witness of the sufferings of the Christ, and of the glory about to be revealed a partaker,
1The elders which [are] among you I exhort, who [am their] fellow-elder and witness of the sufferings of the Christ, who also [am] partaker of the glory about to be revealed:
2Keep watch over the flock of God which is in your care, using your authority, not as forced to do so, but gladly; and not for unclean profit but with a ready mind;
2feed the flock of God that <FI>is<Fi> among you, overseeing not constrainedly, but willingly, neither for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind,
2shepherd the flock ofGod which [is] among you, exercising oversight, not by necessity, but willingly; not for base gain, but readily;
3Not as lords over God's heritage, but making yourselves examples to the flock.
3neither as exercising lordship over the heritages, but patterns becoming of the flock,
3not as lording it over your possessions, but being models for the flock.
4And at the coming of the chief Keeper of the sheep, you will be given the eternal crown of glory.
4and at the manifestation of the chief Shepherd, ye shall receive the unfading crown of glory.
4And when the chief shepherd is manifested ye shall receive the unfading crown of glory.
5And in the same way, let the younger men be ruled by the older ones. Let all of you put away pride and make yourselves ready to be servants: for God is a hater of pride, but he gives grace to those who make themselves low.
5In like manner, ye younger, be subject to elders, and all to one another subjecting yourselves; with humble-mindedness clothe yourselves, because God the proud doth resist, but to the humble He doth give grace;
5Likewise [ye] younger, be subject to [the] elder, and all of you bind on humility towards one another; forGod sets himself against [the] proud, but to [the] humble gives grace.
6For this cause make yourselves low under the strong hand of God, so that when the time comes you may be lifted up;
6be humbled, then, under the powerful hand of God, that you He may exalt in good time,
6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand ofGod, that he may exalt you in [the due] time;
7Putting all your troubles on him, for he takes care of you.
7all your care having cast upon Him, because He careth for you.
7having cast all your care upon him, for he cares about you.
8Be serious and keep watch; the Evil One, who is against you, goes about like a lion with open mouth in search of food;
8Be sober, vigilant, because your opponent the devil, as a roaring lion, doth walk about, seeking whom he may swallow up,
8Be vigilant, watch. Your adversary [the] devil as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour.
9Do not give way to him but be strong in your faith, in the knowledge that your brothers who are in the world undergo the same troubles.
9whom resist, stedfast in the faith, having known the same sufferings to your brotherhood in the world to be accomplished.
9Whom resist, stedfast in faith, knowing that the selfsame sufferings are accomplished in your brotherhood which [is] in [the] world.
10And after you have undergone pain for a little time, the God of all grace who has given you a part in his eternal glory through Christ Jesus, will himself give you strength and support, and make you complete in every good thing;
10And the God of all grace, who did call you to His age-during glory in Christ Jesus, having suffered a little, Himself make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle <FI>you<Fi> ;
10But theGod of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, when ye have suffered for a little while, himself shall make perfect, stablish, strengthen, ground:
11His is the power for ever. So be it.
11to Him <FI>is<Fi> the glory, and the power--to the ages and the ages! Amen.
11to him [be] the glory and the might for the ages of the ages. Amen.
12I have sent you this short letter by Silvanus, a true brother, in my opinion; comforting you and witnessing that this is the true grace of God; keep to it.
12Through Silvanus, to you the faithful brother, as I reckon, through few <FI>words<Fi> I did write, exhorting and testifying this to be the true grace of God in which ye have stood.
12By Silvanus, the faithful brother, as I suppose, I have written to you briefly; exhorting and testifying that this is [the] true grace ofGod in which ye stand.
