What 1 Peter 5:7 means

Humbling ourselves under God’s hand means releasing our worries into His care. Peter invites believers to cast all anxieties on Him—nothing is too small or too great—because God truly cares. This is not passivity but an act of faith that refuses to be mastered by fear. It places the weight of concern on the shoulders of the One who loves and sustains His people. In trials, anxiety can choke joy and sap courage; entrusting it to God frees us to endure, pray, and serve. The assurance of His care is the anchor for this command, turning burdens into prayers and rest.

Context

This completes the thought begun in verse 6: humble trust expresses itself in handing every care to God. The next verses (8–9) add a needed balance—vigilance and resistance against the devil. Casting cares on God does not mean dropping our guard; rather, it equips us to stand firm without being overwhelmed. Then verse 10 will lift our eyes to God’s promised restoration after a “little while” of suffering.

v.6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

v.7This passage

v.8Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
