1The elders therefore among you I exhort, who am a fellow-elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, who am also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
1I have a message for the elders among you. I am an elder too, and I saw Christ suffer with my own eyes. I will also share in the glory that is going to be revealed.
2Tend the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, according to the will of God; nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
2Take care of God’s flock that is in your charge. Watch over them because you want to, as God wants you to, not because you feel forced. Do not do it just to make money, but because you are eager to serve.
3neither as lording it over the charge allotted to you, but making yourselves ensamples to the flock.
3Do not act like bosses over the people given to your care, but lead them by being good examples to the flock.
4And when the chief Shepherd shall be manifested, ye shall receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away.
4Then, when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of glory that will never lose its beauty.
5Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.
5In the same way, you who are younger should follow the leadership of the elders. All of you should put on humility like a garment to serve one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;
6So humble yourselves under God’s powerful hand, and he will honor you at the right time.
7casting all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you.
7Give all your worries and cares to him, because he cares about you.
8Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
8Control yourselves and stay alert. Your enemy, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat.
9whom withstand stedfast in your faith, knowing that the same sufferings are accomplished in your brethren who are in the world.
9Stand strong against him by staying firm in your faith. Remember that your brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kinds of suffering.
10And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffered a little while, shall himself perfect, establish, strengthen you.
10God is the source of all grace, and he called you to his eternal glory in Christ. After you have suffered for a little while, he will restore you, support you, strengthen you, and place you on a solid foundation.
12By Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I accounthim, I have written unto you briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God: stand ye fast therein.
12I have written this short letter to you with the help of Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother. My goal was to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.
