1So that as Jesus was put to death in the flesh, do you yourselves be of the same mind; for the death of the flesh puts an end to sin;
1Christ therefore having suffered in the flesh, be you also armed with the same thought: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sins:
1Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
2So that you may give the rest of your lives in the flesh, not to the desires of men, but to the purpose of God.
2That now he may live the rest of his time in the flesh, not after the desires of men but according to the will of God.
2that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
3Because for long enough, in times past, we have been living after the way of the Gentiles, given up to the desires of the flesh, to drinking and feasting and loose behaviour and unclean worship of images;
3For the time past is sufficient to have fulfilled the will of the Gentiles, for them who have walked in riotousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings and unlawful worshipping of idols.
3For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries:
4And they are wondering that you no longer go with them in this violent wasting of life, and are saying evil things of you:
4Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them into the same confusion of riotousness: speaking evil of you.
4wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
5But they will have to give an account of themselves to him who is ready to be the judge of the living and the dead.
5Who shall render account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
5who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead.
6For this was the reason why the good news of Jesus was given even to the dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but might be living before God in the spirit.
6For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to the dead: That they might be judged indeed according to men, in the flesh: but may live according to God, in the Spirit.
6For unto this end was the gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
7But the end of all things is near: so be serious in your behaviour and keep on the watch with prayer;
7But the end of all is at hand. Be prudent therefore and watch in prayers.
7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer:
8And most of all be warm in your love for one another; because in love there is forgiveness for sins without number:
8But before all things have a constant mutual charity among yourselves: for charity covereth a multitude of sins.
8above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins:
9Keep open house for all with a glad heart;
9Using hospitality one towards another, without murmuring,
9using hospitality one to another without murmuring:
10Making distribution among one another of whatever has been given to you, like true servants of the unmeasured grace of God;
10As every man hath received grace, ministering the same one to another: as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
10according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God;
11If anyone has anything to say, let it be as the words of God; if anyone has the desire to be the servant of others, let him do it in the strength which is given by God; so that in all things God may have the glory through Jesus Christ, whose are the glory and the power for ever.
11If any man speak, let him speak, as the words of God. If any minister, let him do it, as of the power which God administereth: that in all things God may be honoured through Jesus Christ: to whom is glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen.
11if any man speaketh, speaking as it were oracles of God; if any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12Dear brothers, do not be surprised, as if it was something strange, if your faith is tested as by fire:
12Dearly beloved, think not strange the burning heat which is to try you: as if some new thing happened to you.
12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, as though a strange thing happened unto you:
13But be glad that you are given a part in the pains of Christ; so that at the revelation of his glory you may have great joy.
13But if you partake of the sufferings of Christ, rejoice that, when his glory shall be revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
13but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exceeding joy.
14If men say evil things of you because of the name of Christ, happy are you; for the Spirit of glory and of God is resting on you.
14If you be reproached for the name of Christ, you shall be blessed: for that which is of the honour, glory and power of God, and that which is his Spirit resteth upon you.
14If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are ye; because the Spirit of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you.
15Let no one among you undergo punishment as a taker of life, or as a thief, or as an evil-doer, or as one who is over-interested in other men's business;
15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or a railer or coveter of other men's things.
15For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men’s matters:
16But if he undergoes punishment as a Christian, that is no shame to him; let him give glory to God in this name.
16But, if as a Christian, let him not be ashamed: but let him glorify God in that name.
16but if a man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.
17For the time has come for the judging, starting with the church of God; but if it makes a start with us, what will be the end of those who are not under the rule of God?
17For the time is, that judgment should begin at the house of God. And if at first at us, what shall be the end of them that believe not the gospel of God?
17For the time is come for judgment to begin at the house of God: and if it begin first at us, what shall be the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?
18And if it is hard for even the good man to get salvation, what chance has the man without religion or the sinner?
18And if the just man shall scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
18And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear?
19For this reason let those who by the purpose of God undergo punishment, keep on in well-doing and put their souls into the safe hands of their Maker.
19Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commend their souls in good deeds to the faithful Creator.
19Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.
