1Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
1Since Christ suffered in his body, you should arm yourselves with the same attitude he had. Anyone who has suffered in the body is finished with sin,
2that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
2so that you don't spend the rest of your lives chasing human desires, but instead live to do what God wants.
3For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries:
3You have already spent enough time in the past doing what ungodly people like to do—living in lust, drunkenness, wild parties, drinking bouts, and disgusting idol worship.
4wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
4Your former friends are surprised that you no longer join them in their wild and destructive lifestyle, so they insult you and speak evil of you.
5who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead.
5But they will have to give an account of themselves to the one who is ready to judge both the living and the dead.
6For unto this end was the gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
6This is why the Good News was preached even to those who are now dead; so that though they were judged according to human standards while in the body, they might live according to God in the spirit.碎
7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer:
7The end of all things is near. Therefore, be clear-minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.
8above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins:
8Most importantly, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
9using hospitality one to another without murmuring:
9Be hospitable to one another and welcome guests into your home without complaining.碎
10according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God;
10God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another as good managers of God’s grace.
11if any man speaketh, speaking as it were oracles of God; if any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
11If you speak, speak as though you are delivering the words of God. If you serve, do it with the strength God provides. Then in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and power forever and ever. Amen.
12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, as though a strange thing happened unto you:
12Dear friends, do not be surprised by the painful trial you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.
13but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exceeding joy.
13Instead, be glad that you are sharing in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be filled with joy when his glory is revealed.
14If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are ye; because the Spirit of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you.
14If people insult you because you bear the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the glorious Spirit of God rests on you.
15For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men’s matters:
15None of you should suffer for being a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even for meddling in other people's business.
16but if a man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.
16But if you suffer for being a Christian, do not be ashamed. Instead, praise God that you bear that name.
17For the time is come for judgment to begin at the house of God: and if it begin first at us, what shall be the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?
17For the time has come for judgment to begin, and it starts with God’s own family. If judgment begins with us, what will happen to those who refuse to obey the Good News of God?
