בָּהַל

(bahal)

verb

To be greatly distressed, alarmed, or disturbed, often resulting in hasty action or speech.

The Hebrew verb *bahal* describes a state of intense internal agitation, often translating to "troubled," "dismayed," or "alarmed." This inward trembling can provoke outward responses, including fear-driven haste or rashness. The word encompasses both the internal emotional state and its observable consequences. While often indicating a negative experience of fear or distress, *bahal* can also describe a quick action prompted by urgent circumstances rather than solely by fear.

In biblical contexts, *bahal* frequently appears when individuals or groups are confronted with unexpected and overwhelming situations. For instance, Saul is "sore troubled" (1 Sam 28:21) when facing a difficult decision, highlighting the internal turmoil that can accompany grave circumstances. This sense of being overwhelmed is also evident when God's hidden face causes people to be "troubled" (Ps 104:29), linking the verb to divine judgment or withdrawal. The feeling of being troubled can be inflicted by human enemies (2 Chron 32:18; Dan 11:44) or by divine intervention, as seen in Uzziah's hasty departure from the temple when smitten with leprosy (2 Chron 26:20).

The semantic range of *bahal* also extends to actions taken in haste. This can be a negative admonition against rashness, particularly in speech before God (Eccl 5:2) or in becoming angry (Eccl 7:9). Such haste is presented as unwise and potentially harmful. Conversely, haste can be a neutral or positive description of quick execution due to urgent commands, such as Haman being "hasted to bring" to the banquet (Esther 6:14) or royal couriers being "hastened and pressed on" (Esther 8:14) to deliver a decree. Thus, the context is crucial for understanding whether *bahal* implies a negative emotional state, a regrettable rash action, or simply a swift response to a command.
