שִׁמְעוֹן

(shim-ON)

proper noun

Shimon, typically transliterated as Simeon, refers to one of Jacob’s twelve sons and the Israelite tribe descended from him.

Simeon is a significant proper noun in the Hebrew Bible, primarily identifying the second son born to Jacob and Leah. The name itself is related to the Hebrew verb "shamaʿ," meaning "to hear," which is alluded to in Genesis 29:33 when Leah names him, saying, "Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also." This personal narrative highlights God's attentiveness to Leah's distress, establishing a theological undertone of divine hearing and response associated with Simeon from his birth.

Simeon’s narrative in Genesis includes his involvement with his brother Levi in the violent reprisal against the men of Shechem after the defiling of their sister Dinah (Genesis 34). This act drew Jacob’s rebuke on his deathbed (Genesis 49:5–7), indicating a negative assessment of their uncontrolled anger and violence. Jacob’s prophecy regarding Simeon and Levi was that they would be dispersed in Israel, a fate that materialized differently for each tribe. While Levi was dispersed as priests, Simeon’s tribal territory was eventually located as enclaves within the larger territory of Judah, reflecting a diminished and absorbed identity relative to the other tribes.

The tribe of Simeon is enumerated in the censuses of Israel in the books of Numbers. Their geographical placement within Judah is detailed in Joshua 19:1–9, cementing their subordinate position. Throughout the historical books, references to Simeon are fewer compared to other prominent tribes, often appearing in lists of tribes or their descendants. While Simeon is mentioned in future-oriented prophetic texts like Ezekiel, the tribe never achieves the prominence or independent identity of many of its fellow tribes, serving as a poignant example of how tribal fortunes could shift based on historical events and ancestral pronouncements.
