Hebrew · Strong's H7141
קֹרַח
(KOH-rach)
proper noun
Korah was the name of several individuals in the Old Testament, most notably an Edomite chief and a Levite who rebelled against Moses.
The Hebrew name Korah refers to multiple figures in the Old Testament. The most prominent Korah is a Levite, son of Izhar, who led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron during the Israelites' wilderness wanderings (Numbers 16). This Korah, along with Dathan and Abiram, challenged the divinely established leadership, asserting that the entire community was holy and therefore not exclusively needing Moses and Aaron as mediates. His rebellion resulted in divine judgment, with the earth opening up and swallowing the rebels and their families, and fire consuming others who supported them. This event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of challenging God's appointed authority and the seriousness of rebellion.
Another significant biblical reference to Korah is found in the genealogies of Edom, where Korah is listed as a duke, a descendant of Esau (Genesis 36). This indicates a tribal leader among the Edomites, a people frequently in conflict with Israel. The presence of this name in both Israelite and Edomite contexts highlights its existence as a personal name within different ancient Near Eastern cultures.
A third group of individuals known as the "sons of Korah" are mentioned frequently in the Psalms. These were a family of Levites, descendants of the rebellious Korah, who served as temple musicians and gatekeepers. Despite their ancestor's rebellion, this lineage remained in service to God, producing many beautiful psalms that express themes of worship, trust, and longing for God's presence. Their inclusion in the divinely inspired songbook of Israel demonstrates God's grace and ability to redeem a lineage and use them for his glory, even after a significant familial fall.
