צַדִּיק

(tsahd-DEEK)

adjective

Used to describe persons, actions, or attributes that conform to an ethical or legal standard, often referring to a right relationship with God.

The Hebrew adjective צַדִּיק (tsaddiq) denotes righteousness or justice, referring to a state of being in conformity with an accepted standard. This standard can be human, such as legal or ethical norms, but predominantly in the Old Testament, it refers to God's revealed will and character. Thus, a "righteous" person is one who aligns their life and actions with God's expectations. This concept is foundational to Israel's covenant relationship with Yahweh, emphasizing adherence to divine laws and displaying moral integrity.

While צַדִּיק can describe someone who is legally justified or ethically upright in human courts, its theological weight comes from its connection to God's own righteousness (צֶדֶק, tsedeq). God is portrayed as ultimately righteous in his dealings, and he desires righteousness from his people. Therefore, to be צַדִּיק is not merely to be innocent but to actively pursue justice, show mercy, and live in a manner that honors God. This righteousness is often contrasted with the behavior of the wicked, highlighting the moral and spiritual divide between those who follow God and those who do not.

The scope of צַדִּיק extends beyond individual piety to social justice. A righteous person and a righteous society are expected to uphold justice, protect the vulnerable, and correct wrongs. The prophets frequently call for social justice, emphasizing that true righteousness involves caring for the poor and oppressed. In the New Testament, while the Greek equivalent δίκαιος (dikaios) maintains this ethical dimension, it also expands to convey a righteousness that is imputed by faith in Christ, demonstrating both continuity and development in the biblical understanding of righteousness.
