עַמּוֹן

(am-MOHN)

proper noun

Ammon refers to a nation and people descended from Ben-Ammi, a son of Lot and his younger daughter.

The term Ammon, and its plural form Ammonites, consistently refers to a people group and their territory located east of the Jordan River. Their lineage is traced back to Ben-Ammi, born of Lot and his younger daughter (Genesis 19:38). Throughout the Old Testament, the Ammonites are frequently depicted in conflict with Israel, reflecting a long-standing antagonistic relationship. Their territory bordered Israelite lands, leading to numerous clashes over land and influence.

The relationship between Israel and Ammon was often one of hostility. Accounts in Numbers, Judges, and the books of Samuel detail various conflicts. The Ammonites were known for their idolatry, including the worship of Molech, a practice abhorrent to Yahweh. This religious deviation and their recurrent military aggression contributed to prophetic condemnations against them, as seen in Jeremiah and Ezekiel. They are presented as a symbol of the nations that oppose God's people.

Despite their frequent opposition, the biblical narrative also includes instances of interaction beyond warfare. However, the overarching portrayal emphasizes their distinct national identity and their consistent role as adversaries of Israel. Their ultimate fate, according to prophetic pronouncements, involved divine judgment due to their pride and ill-treatment of Israel.
