Hebrew · Strong's H558

אֲמַצְיָה

(ah-MATZ-yah)

proper noun

Amaziah was the name of several Israelite men, most notably a king of Judah and a priest in Bethel.

The name Amaziah means "Yahweh is strong" or "strengthened by Yahweh." It is borne by four distinct individuals in the Old Testament, suggesting a common and perhaps aspirational name among ancient Israelites. The two most prominent figures are Amaziah, king of Judah, and Amaziah, the priest of Bethel during the time of the prophet Amos. The king Amaziah is presented in 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles as a monarch who began his reign doing what was right in the sight of the Lord, but ultimately faltered in his faithfulness. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained obedience and reliance on God.

The other significant Amaziah is encountered in the book of Amos. He was a priest of the idolatrous cult center at Bethel in the northern kingdom of Israel. His confrontation with the prophet Amos highlights the spiritual conflict between true prophecy and institutionalized religion that had departed from God's ways. This Amaziah actively opposed Amos's message, perceiving it as a threat to the established order and to his own authority. Both men named Amaziah, though vastly different in their roles and allegiance to God, underscore the prophetic and historical narratives of their respective eras. Their narratives contribute to the broader biblical themes of leadership, faithfulness, and the challenges faced by those who proclaim God's word.
