יְהוֹיָקִים

(yeh-ho-yah-KEEM)

proper noun

Jehoiakim was a king of Judah, originally named Eliakim, whose reign was marked by apostasy and conflict with the prophet Jeremiah.

Jehoiakim was the eighteenth king of Judah, ruling for eleven years (609–598 BC) during a tumultuous period preceding the Babylonian exile. Initially named Eliakim, his name was changed to Jehoiakim by Pharaoh Neco II, who placed him on the throne after deposing his younger brother Jehoahaz (2 Kings 23:34; 2 Chron 36:4). His name means "Yahweh raises up" or "Yahweh establishes," a poignant irony given his defiance of God and subsequent downfall.

Jehoiakim's reign is largely characterized by his opposition to the prophet Jeremiah’s messages of impending judgment from Babylon. He was known for his oppressive policies, lavish building projects fueled by forced labor, and idolatrous practices. Most notably, Jehoiakim publicly burned a scroll containing Jeremiah’s prophecies (Jeremiah 36), an act of open rebellion against God's word. This defiance brought further condemnation from the Lord, with Jeremiah predicting a dishonorable burial for Jehoiakim (Jeremiah 22:18-19).

Historically, Jehoiakim initially served as a vassal of Egypt, but later became a vassal of Babylon after Nebuchadnezzar's victory at Carchemish (2 Kings 24:1). He eventually rebelled against Babylon, leading to an invasion and siege of Jerusalem. The circumstances of his death are somewhat unclear; while 2 Kings states he “slept with his fathers,” Daniel 1:1-2 suggests he was taken captive to Babylon, and Jeremiah 22:19 predicts his unburied body would be exposed. This suggests a tumultuous end, consistent with his rebellious reign and the prophetic pronouncements against him.
