יֹאשִׁיָּה

(yo-she-YAH)

proper noun

Josiah refers to two different men in the Old Testament, one a king of Judah and the other a minor figure mentioned in Zechariah.

Josiah is most famously known as a king of Judah, reigning for 31 years. He ascended to the throne at the age of eight after the assassination of his father, Amon. His reign is largely remembered for his fervent religious reforms, during which he purged Judah and Jerusalem of idolatry and re-established the worship of Yahweh according to the Law of Moses. This period of reform was sparked by the discovery of the Book of the Law in the Temple during its repair. Josiah’s actions led to a national renewal of the covenant with God, marked by a solemn Passover celebration described as unparalleled since the days of Samuel. His reign, however, ended tragically when he confronted Pharaoh Neco of Egypt at Megiddo and was killed.

The name Josiah also appears in the book of Zechariah, referring to a different individual, the son of Zephaniah. This Josiah plays a minor role, being one of the men from whom the prophet Zechariah is commanded to take silver and gold to make a crown, symbolizing the future messianic king. This specific mention provides a glimpse into the community of exiles who had returned from Babylon and were involved in the rebuilding efforts in Jerusalem.

While the king Josiah is a pivotal figure in the history of Judah, frequently linked to both periods of national revival and moments of significant political upheaval, the Josiah mentioned in Zechariah offers a more obscure but still biblical reference. The theological weight of the name largely derives from the king, whose dedication to the Lord and efforts to restore true worship serve as a model of righteous leadership, even though his reforms ultimately could not stave off the Babylonian exile. The repeated references to King Josiah in Jeremiah’s prophecies underscore his significance as a benchmark for Judah’s kings.
