חָלַק

(khaw-LAK)

verb

To divide, distribute, or assign portions, often in the context of land, spoil, or inheritance.

The Hebrew verb *ḥālak* primarily conveys the idea of division, apportionment, or distribution. This can literally refer to the parceling out of land, as seen in the division of Canaan among the tribes of Israel, or the sharing of spoils from battle. The core sense revolves around separating a whole into parts and assigning those parts to individuals or groups. The manner of division could be by lot, by deliberate decision, or by natural consequence.

Beyond physical division, *ḥālak* can also denote the idea of assigning a portion or lot in a more abstract sense, such as God assigning a portion to an individual or a nation. In some rare instances, the word can take on the figurative meaning of "to flatter" or "to be smooth," perhaps from the literal sense of making something smooth or slick, implying deceptive speech. However, its most prominent usage throughout the Old Testament remains connected to the administration of resources and the establishment of order through equitable (or divinely ordained) distribution.

This verb highlights God's role in ordering creation and human society by assigning specific territories, responsibilities, or destinies. It also reflects human actions in managing and sharing what they possess, whether justly or unjustly. The concept of receiving a "portion" or "inheritance" is significant, often carrying theological weight concerning divine provision and covenant promises.
