זְבוּלוּן

(ZEB-yoo-luhn)

proper noun

Zebulun was the tenth son of Jacob, the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and the geographical region settled by his descendants.

The Hebrew proper name Zebulun refers to both the son of Jacob and Leah, and to the tribe and territory that descended from him. The name itself is connected to the Hebrew verb meaning "to dwell" or "to honor," which is reflected in Jacob's naming of his son (Genesis 30:20). Zebulun, as a tribe, received a portion of the Promised Land situated in the northern part of Canaan, bordering Asher and Naphtali, extending from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sea of Galilee. This strategic location brought both prosperity and exposure to foreign influences.

Throughout the Old Testament, the tribe of Zebulun is mentioned in various contexts, including censuses, battle accounts, and territorial descriptions. They are often associated with the northern tribes, and their participation in significant events, such as the battles under Deborah and Barak (Judges 4-5), highlights their role in Israelite history. Moses' blessing in Deuteronomy 33:18-19 speaks of Zebulun's maritime activities and their participation in the worship at the "mountain," suggesting a connection to both commercial ventures and religious devotion.

The tribe of Zebulun played a role in the united monarchy, contributing to David's army (1 Chronicles 12). After the division of the kingdom, Zebulun remained part of the northern kingdom of Israel until its fall to the Assyrians. Despite their eventual dispersion, the memory of Zebulun endured. It is noteworthy that the region of Zebulun is mentioned in the New Testament (Matthew 4:13-15) as part of "Galilee of the Gentiles," a place where Jesus began his public ministry, fulfilling a prophecy from Isaiah concerning light shining in darkness. This gives Zebulun a unique spiritual significance as a locale touched by the coming of the Messiah.
