1And thou--be speaking what doth become the sound teaching;
1But do thou speak the things that become sound teaching;
2aged men to be temperate, grave, sober, sound in the faith, in the love, in the endurance;
2that the elder men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in faith, in love, in patience;
3aged women, in like manner, in deportment as doth become sacred persons, not false accusers, to much wine not enslaved, of good things teachers,
3that the elder women in like manner be in deportment as becoming those who have to say to sacred things, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, teachers of what is right;
4that they may make the young women sober-minded, to be lovers of <FI>their<Fi> husbands, lovers of <FI>their<Fi> children,
4that they may admonish the young women to be attached to [their] husbands, to be attached to [their] children,
5sober, pure, keepers of <FI>their own<Fi> houses, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be evil spoken of.
5discreet, chaste, diligent in home work, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word ofGod may not be evil spoken of.
6The younger men, in like manner, be exhorting to be sober-minded;
6The younger men in like manner exhort to be discreet:
7concerning all things thyself showing a pattern of good works; in the teaching uncorruptedness, gravity, incorruptibility,
7in all things affording thyself as a pattern of good works; in teaching uncorruptedness, gravity,
8discourse sound, irreprehensible, that he who is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say concerning you.
8a sound word, not to be condemned; that he who is opposed may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us:
9Servants--to their own masters <FI>are<Fi> to be subject, in all things to be well-pleasing, not gainsaying,
9bondmen to be subject to their own masters, to make themselves acceptable in everything; not gainsaying;
10not purloining, but showing all good stedfastness, that the teaching of God our Saviour they may adorn in all things.
10not robbing [their masters], but shewing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the teaching which [is] of our SaviourGod in all things.
11For the saving grace of God was manifested to all men,
11For the grace ofGod which carries with it salvation for all men has appeared,
12teaching us, that denying the impiety and the worldly desires, soberly and righteously and piously we may live in the present age,
12teaching us that, having denied impiety and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, and justly, and piously in the present course of things,
13waiting for the blessed hope and manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ,
13awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our greatGod and Saviour Jesus Christ;
