1But speak thou the things which befit the sound doctrine:
1But speak thou the things that become sound doctrine:
1But do thou speak the things that become sound teaching;
2that aged men be temperate, grave, sober-minded, sound in faith, in love, in patience:
2That the aged men be sober, chaste, prudent, sound in faith, in love, in patience.
2that the elder men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in faith, in love, in patience;
3that aged women likewise be reverent in demeanor, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good;
3The aged women, in like manner, in holy attire, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching well:
3that the elder women in like manner be in deportment as becoming those who have to say to sacred things, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, teachers of what is right;
4that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
4That they may teach the young women to be wise, to love their husbands, to love their children.
4that they may admonish the young women to be attached to [their] husbands, to be attached to [their] children,
5to be sober-minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed:
5To be discreet, chaste, sober, having a care of the house, gentle, obedient to their husbands: that the word of God be not blasphemed.
5discreet, chaste, diligent in home work, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word ofGod may not be evil spoken of.
6the younger men likewise exhort to be sober-minded:
6Young men, in like manner, exhort that they be sober.
6The younger men in like manner exhort to be discreet:
7in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity,
7In all things shew thyself an example of good works, in doctrine, in integrity, in gravity,
7in all things affording thyself as a pattern of good works; in teaching uncorruptedness, gravity,
8sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us.
8The sound word that can not be blamed: that he who is on the contrary part may be afraid, having no evil to say of us.
8a sound word, not to be condemned; that he who is opposed may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us:
9Exhort servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing to them in all things; not gainsaying;
9Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters: in all things pleasing, not gainsaying:
9bondmen to be subject to their own masters, to make themselves acceptable in everything; not gainsaying;
10not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
10Not defrauding, but in all things shewing good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
10not robbing [their masters], but shewing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the teaching which [is] of our SaviourGod in all things.
11For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men,
11For the grace of God our Saviour hath appeared to all men:
11For the grace ofGod which carries with it salvation for all men has appeared,
12instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world;
12Instructing us, that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live soberly and justly and godly in this world,
12teaching us that, having denied impiety and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, and justly, and piously in the present course of things,
13looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
13Looking for the blessed hope and coming of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
13awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our greatGod and Saviour Jesus Christ;
14who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works.
14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity and might cleanse to himself a people acceptable, a pursuer of good works.
14who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous for good works.
