Titus 2

1But speak thou the things which befit the sound doctrine:

1But you must teach what is consistent with sound and healthy doctrine.

2that aged men be temperate, grave, sober-minded, sound in faith, in love, in patience:

2Teach the older men to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and healthy in their faith, their love, and their endurance.

3that aged women likewise be reverent in demeanor, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good;

3Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that shows they are holy. They should not be gossips or addicted to wine, but should teach what is good.

4that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,

4In this way, they can train the younger women to love their husbands and their children,

5to be sober-minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed:

5to be sensible, pure, hard workers in their homes, and kind, and to follow the leadership of their own husbands, so that no one will speak evil of God’s word.

6the younger men likewise exhort to be sober-minded:

6In the same way, encourage the young men to be sensible and self-controlled.

7in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity,

7In everything you do, be an example of good works yourself. When you teach, show integrity and seriousness.

8sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us.

8Use healthy speech that no one can criticize, so that those who oppose us will be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

9Exhort servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing to them in all things; not gainsaying;

9Tell bondservants to be subject to their own masters and to try to please them in everything, not talking back to them.

10not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

10They should not steal, but should show that they are entirely trustworthy. By doing this, they will make the teaching about God our Savior look beautiful in every way.

11For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men,

11For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.

12instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world;

12It teaches us to say 'no' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present world.

13looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

13We do this while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

14who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works.

14He gave himself for us to set us free from all wickedness and to cleanse for himself a people who are his very own, eager to do good works.

15These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

15Teach these things, encourage people, and correct them with full authority. Do not let anyone look down on you.
