1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

1So, what should we say? Should we keep on sinning so that God can show us even more grace?

2God forbid. We who died to sin, how shall we any longer live therein?

2Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?

3Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

3Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

4We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

4Through baptism, we were buried with him into death. This was done so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, we also might live a brand-new life.

5For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection;

5If we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

6knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin;

6We know that our old self was crucified with him. This happened so that our sinful nature would lose its power, and we would no longer be slaves to sin.

7for he that hath died is justified from sin.

7For when a person dies, they are set free from the power of sin.

8But if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him;

8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

9knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death no more hath dominion over him.

9We know that Christ was raised from the dead and will never die again; death no longer has any power over him.

10For the death that he died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

10When he died, he died to sin once and for all; but the life he lives now, he lives for God.

11Even so reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus.

11In the same way, you should consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey the lusts thereof:

12Do not let sin rule your temporary earthly body, making you obey its evil desires.

13neither present your members unto sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves unto God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

13Do not give any part of your body to sin to be used as a tool for injustice. Instead, give yourselves to God as people who have been brought from death to life, and offer every part of your body to him as a tool for doing what is right.

14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under law, but under grace.

14Sin will not be your master, because you are not living under the law, but under God's grace.

15What then? shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid.

15What should we do then? Should we sin because we are under grace instead of the law? Absolutely not!

16Know ye not, that to whom ye present yourselves as servants unto obedience, his servants ye are whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

16Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can be a slave to obedience, which leads to being right with God.

17But thanks be to God, that, whereas ye were servants of sin, ye became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching whereunto ye were delivered;

17Thank God that although you used to be slaves to sin, you have now obeyed from the heart the teaching that was given to you.

18and being made free from sin, ye became servants of righteousness.

18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to what is right.

19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye presented your members as servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity, even so now present your members as servants to righteousness unto sanctification.

19I am using this illustration of slavery because it is easy to understand. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body to be slaves to impurity and lawlessness—which only led to more lawlessness—now you must offer them as slaves to what is right, which leads to holiness.

20For when ye were servants of sin, ye were free in regard of righteousness.

20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.

21What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

21And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, and those things end in death.

22But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end eternal life.

22But now you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God. The benefit you get is a holy life, and the final result is eternal life.

23For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
