1Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth?
1Don’t you know, brothers and sisters—since I am speaking to people who understand the law—that legal rules only have power over a person as long as they are alive?
2For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.
2For example, by law a married woman is tied to her husband while he stays alive; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that bound her to him.
3So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.
3So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still living, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and is not an adulteress even if she marries another man.
4Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.
4In the same way, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ. This happened so that you could belong to someone else—to the one who was raised from the dead—in order that we might produce a harvest for God.
5For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
5When we were controlled by our old nature, sinful desires were stirred up by the law and worked within our bodies to produce a harvest that ends in death.
6But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.
6But now we have been released from the law because we died to what used to hold us captive. Now we serve in a new way through the Spirit, and not in the old way of obeying written rules.
7What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:
7What should we say then? Is the law itself sinful? Absolutely not! But I wouldn't have known what sin was if it wasn't for the law. For instance, I would not have known what it meant to want what belongs to others if the law hadn't said, 'You must not covet.'
8but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin is dead.
8But sin took the opportunity provided by that commandment to stir up every kind of selfish desire in me. Without the law, sin is dead.
9And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;
9I was once alive without the law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life and I died.
10and the commandment, which was unto life, this I found to be unto death:
10I discovered that the very commandment intended to bring life actually brought death to me.
11for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.
11For sin took the opportunity through the commandment to trick me, and it used the commandment to kill me.
12So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.
12So the law itself is holy, and the commandment is holy, right, and good.
13Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good;—that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.
13Did something good become the cause of my death? Of course not! It was sin that did it. Sin used what was good to bring about my death, so that sin might be clearly seen for what it is. Through the commandment, sin became even more sinful.
14For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
14We know that the law is spiritual, but I am merely human, sold as a slave to sin.
15For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do.
15I don't understand what I do. I don't do what I want to do, but instead I do the very thing I hate.
16But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good.
16If I do the things I don't want to do, I am agreeing that the law is good.
17So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.
17So I am not really the one doing it anymore; it is the sin living inside me that does it.
18For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not.
18I know that nothing good lives in me—that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can't carry it out.
19For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise.
19I don't do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I don't want to do.
20But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.
20Now if I do what I don't want to do, I am no longer the one doing it; it is the sin living in me that is doing it.
21I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present.
21So I find this rule at work: when I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
23but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.
23But I see another law at work in my body, at war with the law of my mind. It makes me a prisoner to the law of sin that is in my body.—
