1Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;
1Therefore, since we have been made right with God through faith, we have peace with God because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us.
2through whom also we have had our access by faith into this grace wherein we stand; and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
2Through Christ, we have been brought by faith into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.
3And not only so, but we also rejoice in our tribulations: knowing that tribulation worketh stedfastness;
3We can also rejoice when we run into problems and trials, because we know that they help us learn to endure.
4and stedfastness, approvedness; and approvedness, hope:
4Endurance builds character, and character strengthens our hope.
5and hope putteth not to shame; because the love of God hath been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given unto us.
5This hope will never disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit he gave to us.
6For while we were yet weak, in due season Christ died for the ungodly.
6At just the right time, while we were still helpless, Christ died for us ungodly people.
7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: for peradventure for the good man some one would even dare to die.
7Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be brave enough to die for a person who is especially good.
8But God commendeth his own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
8But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from the wrath of God through him.
9Since we have now been made right with God by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s judgment.
10For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life;
10For if our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son now that we are his friends.
11and not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
11And not only that, but we also find great joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has made us friends with God.
12Therefore, as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned:—
12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, because everyone sinned.
13for until the law sin was in the world; but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
13People sinned even before the law was given, but sin is not counted as a violation of the law when there is no law to break.
14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the likeness of Adam’s transgression, who is a figure of him that was to come.
14Still, everyone died from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even those who did not disobey a specific command of God the way Adam did. Adam is a symbol, a representative of Christ, who was yet to come.
15But not as the trespass, so also is the free gift. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound unto the many.
15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.
16And not as through one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment came of one unto condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses unto justification.
16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of one man’s sin. Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with him, even though we are guilty of many sins.
17For if, by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; much more shall they that receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, even Jesus Christ.
17For if the sin of this one man caused death to rule over everyone, even more will those who receive God’s overflowing grace and the gift of righteousness rule in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
18So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life.
18Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one selfless act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.
19For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous.
19Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.
20And the law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace did abound more exceedingly:
20God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became even more abundant.
21that, as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules by making us right with him, leading us to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
