What Romans 5:17 means

If death took the throne through one man’s trespass, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ. The imagery shifts from being ruled by death to sharing in a new dominion of life. Receiving grace and righteousness is the key—they are gifts, not earnings. “Reign in life” points to both present participation in Christ’s life and the future consummation. The supremacy of Christ’s work is clear: His single obedience empowers multitudes to live under a new order where grace, not death, has the last word.

Context

This climactic contrast caps the trio (vv15–17). Having shown that grace abounds and results in justification, Paul now describes its effect as reigning in life through Jesus Christ. With this established, he will present summary statements in vv18–19 using parallel “as/so” constructions to tie together condemnation through Adam and justification through Christ. From there, he will explain the purpose of the law in the story—to make trespass abound—and the even greater superabundance of grace leading to eternal life (vv20–21).

v.16And not as through one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment came of one unto condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses unto justification.

v.17This passage

v.18So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life.
