1Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the powers that be are ordained of God.

1Every person must submit to the governing authorities, because there is no authority except what comes from God, and the authorities that exist have been put in place by God.

2Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment.

2So anyone who rebels against authority is resisting what God has established, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

3For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same:

3Rulers are not a threat to people who do good, but to those who do evil. Do you want to live without fear of authority? Then do what is right, and the government will honor you.

4for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil.

4The authority is God’s servant working for your benefit. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because the authority has the power to punsh for a reason. He is God’s servant, an agent of anger to punish those who do wrong.

5Wherefore ye must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.

5Therefore, you must submit to the authorities, not only to avoid punishment, but also because it is the right thing to do according to your conscience.

6For for this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God’s service, attending continually upon this very thing.

6This is also why you pay taxes; the authorities are God’s servants who give their full time to the work of governing.

7Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

7Give to everyone what you owe them: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if you owe government fees, pay them; if you owe respect, give respect; if you owe honor, give honor.

8Owe no man anything, save to love one another: for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law.

8Don't owe anyone anything, except the constant debt to love each other. Anyone who loves their neighbor has fulfilled the requirements of the law.

9For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

9The commandments—'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not want what others have,' and any other command—are all summed up in this one rule: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

10Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: love therefore is the fulfilment of the law.

10Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the complete fulfillment of the law.

11And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when wefirstbelieved.

11Do all of this because you know what time it is. It is already time for you to wake up from your sleep, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

12The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

12The night is almost over and the day is near. So let us throw off the actions that belong to darkness and put on the armor of light.

13Let us walk becomingly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy.

13Let us live decently, as people do in the daylight, not in wild partying and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and shameful behavior, and not in fighting and jealousy.

14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

14Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to satisfy the sinful desires of your physical nature.
