1Brethren, my heart’s desire and my supplication to God is for them, that they may be saved.
1Brothers and sisters, my heart's deepest desire and my prayer to God for the people of Israel is that they may be saved.
2For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
2I can testify about them that they are very enthusiastic for God, but their enthusiasm is not based on true knowledge.
3For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
3Since they did not understand the righteousness that comes from God and tried to set up their own, they did not submit to God’s way of making people right.
4For Christ is the end of the law unto righteousness to every one that believeth.
4Christ is the end of the law, so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
5For Moses writeth that the man that doeth the righteousness which is of the law shall live thereby.
5Moses writes about the righteousness that comes from the law: 'The person who does these things will live by them.'
6But the righteousness which is of faith saith thus, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down:)
6But the righteousness based on faith says this: 'Do not say in your heart, "Who will go up into heaven?"' (that is, to bring Christ down),
7or, Who shall descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)
7'Or, "Who will go down into the deep?"' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:
8But what does it say? 'The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart.' This is the message of faith that we preach:
9because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:
9If you openly declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
10For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring it with your mouth that you are saved.
11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be put to shame.
11As the Scripture says, 'Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.'
12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek: for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich unto all that call upon him:
12There is no difference between Jews and Gentiles—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses everyone who calls on him.
13for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
13For, 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
14But how can they call on him unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?
15and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!
15And how will anyone go and tell them unless they are sent? As the Scriptures say, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!'
16But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
16But not everyone accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed our message?'
17So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
17So faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
18But I say, Did they not hear? Yea, verily, Their sound went out into all the earth, And their words unto the ends of the world.
18But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: 'Their voice has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.'
19But I say, Did Israel not know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy with that which is no nation, With a nation void of understanding will I anger you.
19Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, 'I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.'
