What Revelation 4:6 means
Before the throne stretches something like a glassy sea, clear as crystal—an image of transcendent calm, purity, and separateness. It both reflects the throne’s glory and sets a boundary that marks God’s otherness. In the midst and around the throne are four living creatures, covered with eyes front and back. Their many eyes symbolize unceasing vigilance and comprehensive insight; nothing escapes their notice in the service of God’s throne. They dwell nearest to the center, entrusted with perceiving and proclaiming God’s holiness. The scene assures believers that the One who reigns sees all perfectly and is attended by creatures formed for watchful worship.

Context
After thunder and fiery lamps, the vision steadies on the serene, crystalline expanse before the throne, heightening the contrast between majesty and peace. Immediately John introduces the four living creatures, placing them in the innermost circle of attendants. Their description begins with eyes and position—perception and proximity—before moving to their forms in the next verse. This order highlights their function as perceivers and heralds of God’s holiness, which will lead directly into their unceasing song that prompts the elders’ response.
v.5And out of the throne proceed lightnings and voices and thunders. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God;
v.6This passage
v.7And the first creature was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face as of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle.
