1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked is before me.
1To the Overseer, to Jeduthun. --A Psalm of David. I have said, `I observe my ways, Against sinning with my tongue, I keep for my mouth a curb, while the wicked <FI>is<Fi> before me.'
1 I said, I will give attention to my ways, so that my tongue may do no wrong; I will keep my mouth under control, while the sinner is before me.
1Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.
2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace from good; and my sorrow was stirred.
2I was dumb <FI>with<Fi> silence, I kept silent from good, and my pain is excited.
2I made no sound, I said no word, even of good; and I was moved with sorrow.
2With expectation I have waited for the Lord, and he was attentive to me.
3 My heart burned within me; the fire was kindled in my musing: I spoke with my tongue,
3Hot <FI>is<Fi> my heart within me, In my meditating doth the fire burn, I have spoken with my tongue.
3My heart was burning in my breast; while I was deep in thought the fire was lighted; then I said with my tongue,
3And he heard my prayers, and brought me out of the pit of misery and the mire of dregs. And he set my feet upon a rock, and directed my steps.
4 Make me to know, Jehovah, mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: I shall know how frail I am.
4`Cause me to know, O Jehovah, mine end, And the measure of my days--what it <FI>is<Fi> ,' I know how frail I <FI>am<Fi> .
4Lord, give me knowledge of my end, and of the measure of my days, so that I may see how feeble I am.
4And he put a new canticle into my mouth, a song to our God. Many shall see, and shall fear: and they shall hope in the Lord.
5 Behold, thou hast made my days [as] hand-breadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before thee; verily, every man, [even] the high placed, is altogether vanity. Selah.
5Lo, handbreadths Thou hast made my days, And mine age <FI>is<Fi> as nothing before Thee, Only, all vanity <FI>is<Fi> every man set up. Selah.
5You have made my days no longer than a hand's measure; and my years are nothing in your eyes; truly, every man is but a breath. (Selah.)
5Blessed is the man whose trust is in the name of the Lord; and who hath not had regard to vanities, and lying follies.
6 Verily, man walketh in a vain show; verily they are disquieted in vain; he heapeth up [riches], and knoweth not who shall gather them.
6Only, in an image doth each walk habitually, Only, <FI>in<Fi> vain, they are disquieted, He heapeth up and knoweth not who gathereth them.
6Truly, every man goes on his way like an image; he is troubled for no purpose: he makes a great store of wealth, and has no knowledge of who will get it.
6Thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, O Lord my God: and in thy thoughts there is no one like to thee. I have declared and I have spoken they are multiplied above number.
7 And now, what wait I for, Lord? my hope is in thee.
7And, now, what have I expected? O Lord, my hope--it <FI>is<Fi> of Thee.
7And now, Lord, what am I waiting for? my hope is in you.
7Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire; but thou hast pierced ears for me. Burnt offering and sin offering thou didst not require:
8 Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the reproach of the foolish.
8From all my transgressions deliver me, A reproach of the fool make me not.
8Make me free from all my sins; do not let me be shamed by the man of evil behaviour.
8Then said I, Behold I come. In the head of the book it is written of me
9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; for thou hast done [it].
9I have been dumb, I open not my mouth, Because Thou--Thou hast done <FI>it<Fi> .
9I was quiet, and kept my mouth shut; because you had done it.
9That I should do thy will: O my God, I have desired it, and thy law in the midst of my heart.
10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.
10Turn aside from off me Thy stroke, From the striving of Thy hand I have been consumed.
10No longer let your hand be hard on me; I am wasted by the blows of your hand.
10I have declared thy justice in a great church, lo, I will not restrain my lips: O Lord, thou knowest it.
11 When thou with rebukes dost correct a man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely, every man is vanity. Selah.
11With reproofs against iniquity, Thou hast corrected man, And dost waste as a moth his desirableness, Only, vanity <FI>is<Fi> every man. Selah.
11By the weight of your wrath against man's sin, the glory of his form is wasted away; truly every man is but a breath. (Selah.)
11I have not hid thy justice within my heart: I have declared thy truth and thy salvation. I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from a great council.
12 Hear my prayer, Jehovah, and give ear unto my cry; be not silent at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, a sojourner, like all my fathers.
12Hear my prayer, O Jehovah, And <FI>to<Fi> my cry give ear, Unto my tear be not silent, For a sojourner I <FI>am<Fi> with Thee, A settler like all my fathers.
12Let my prayer come to your ears, O Lord, and give attention to my cry, make an answer to my weeping: for my time here is short before you, and in a little time I will be gone, like all my fathers.
12Withhold not thou, O Lord, thy tender mercies from me: thy mercy and thy truth have always upheld me.
13 Look away from me, and let me recover strength, before I go hence and be no more.
13Look from me, and I brighten up before I go and am not!
13Let your wrath be turned away from me, so that I may be comforted, before I go away from here, and become nothing.
13For evils without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head: and my heart hath forsaken me.

14Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me. Look down, O Lord, to help me.

15Let them be confounded and ashamed together, that seek after my soul to take it away. Let them be turned backward and be ashamed that desire evils to me.
