What Philippians 1:27 means

Paul urges them to conduct themselves as citizens worthy of the gospel of Christ, whether he can visit or not. This worthy walk includes standing firm in one Spirit and striving together with one soul for the faith of the gospel. Their unity and steadfastness are the visible proof that the gospel has transformed them. They must not depend on Paul’s presence to be faithful. The language evokes disciplined teamwork and shared resolve. The church is to be a cohesive body, energized by the Spirit, contending for the truth in love. Such a corporate witness adorns the gospel before a watching world.

Context

Having discussed his own situation, Paul now exhorts the church. The focus moves from Paul’s chains to their conduct. Unity and perseverance begin the list because the following verses will address adversaries (verse 28) and suffering (verses 29–30). Whether or not Paul can come, he wants to hear that they stand together for the gospel. This sets the frame for fearless courage and a theology of suffering as grace.

v.26that your glorying may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.

v.27This passage

v.28and in nothing affrighted by the adversaries: which is for them an evident token of perdition, but of your salvation, and that from God;
