What Philippians 1:2 means

Paul blesses the church with grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace is God’s unearned favor that saves and sustains; peace is the wholeness and reconciliation that flow from that grace. By naming both the Father and the Lord Jesus, Paul roots the church’s well-being in the saving work of Christ and the fatherly love of God. This is not mere politeness; it is a prayer-wish that God’s active kindness and calming rule would rest on them amid pressures, reminding them that their resources come from above, not from Roman status or human strength.

Context

After identifying himself, Timothy, and the recipients, Paul pronounces a customary yet profound Christian blessing. This prepares the readers to hear the thanksgiving and intercession that follow. Verses 3–8 will unpack Paul’s joy and affection for the Philippians, and verses 9–11 will specify his prayer for their growth. The blessing of grace and peace frames the whole letter, which was written from imprisonment yet filled with joy and encouragement.
