1And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab:

1And Israel dwelleth in Shittim, and the people begin to go a-whoring unto daughters of Moab,

1And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.

1Now when Israel was living in Shittim the people became false to the Lord, doing evil with the daughters of Moab:

2for they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

2and they call for the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people eat, and bow themselves to their gods,

2And they invited the people to the sacrifices of theirgods; and the people ate, and bowed down to theirgods.

2For they sent for the people to be present at the offerings made to their gods; and the people took part in their feasts and gave honour to their gods.

3And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

3and Israel is joined to Baal-Peor, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel.

3And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

3So Israel had relations with the women of Moab in honour of the Baal of Peor: and the Lord was moved to wrath against Israel.

4And Jehovah said unto Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may turn away from Israel.

4And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them before Jehovah--over-against the sun; and the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah doth turn back from Israel.'

4And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.

4Then the Lord said to Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, hanging them up in the sun before the Lord, so that the wrath of the Lord may be turned from Israel.

5And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto Baal-peor.

5And Moses saith unto the judges of Israel, `Slay ye each his men who are joined to Baal-Peor.'

5And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.

5So Moses said to the judges of Israel, Let everyone put to death those of his men who have had relations with the women of Moab in honour of the Baal of Peor.

6And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.

6And lo, a man of the sons of Israel hath come, and bringeth in unto his brethren the Midianitess, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the company of the sons of Israel, who are weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting;

6And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.

6Then one of the children of Israel came to his brothers, taking with him a woman of Midian, before the eyes of Moses and all the meeting of the people, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of meeting.

7And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;

7and Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, seeth, and riseth from the midst of the company, and taketh a javelin in his hand,

7And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,

7And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, seeing it, got up from among the people and took a spear in his hand,

8and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

8and goeth in after the man of Israel unto the hollow place, and pierceth them both, the man of Israel and the woman--unto her belly, and the plague is restrained from the sons of Israel;

8and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

8And went after the man of Israel into the tent, driving the spear through the two of them, through the man of Israel and through the stomach of the woman. So the disease was stopped among the children of Israel.

9And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

9and the dead by the plague are four and twenty thousand.

9And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

9But twenty-four thousand of them had come to their death by the disease.

10And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

10And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

10And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

10And the Lord said to Moses,

11Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

11`Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.

11Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

11Through Phinehas, and because of his passion for my honour, my wrath has been turned away from the children of Israel, so that I have not sent destruction on them all in my wrath.

12Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

12`Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,

12Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!

12So say to them that I will make with him an agreement of peace:

13and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

13and it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.'

13And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for hisGod, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

13And by this agreement, he and his sons after him have the right to be priests for ever; because, by his care for the honour of his God, he took away the sin of the children of Israel.

14Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.

14And the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, <FI>is<Fi> Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;

14And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.

14Now the man of Israel who was put to death with the woman of Midian was Zimri, the son of Salu, a chief of one of the families of the Simeonites.

15And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

15and the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, <FI>is<Fi> Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people--of the house of a father in Midian <FI>is<Fi> he.

15And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

15And the woman of Midian who was put to death was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was the head of a family in Midian.

16And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

16And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

16And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

16Then the Lord said to Moses,

17Vex the Midianites, and smite them;

17`Distress the Midianites, and ye have smitten them,

17Harass the Midianites, and smite them,

17Take up arms against the Midianites and overcome them;

18for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.

18for they are adversaries to you with their frauds, <FI>with<Fi> which they have acted fraudulently to you, concerning the matter of Peor, and concerning the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who is smitten in the day of the plague for the matter of Peor.'

18for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.

18For they are a danger to you with their false ways, causing sin to come on you in the question of Peor, and because of Cozbi, their sister, the daughter of the chief of Midian, who was put to death at the time of the disease which came on you because of Peor.
