1And as he went forth out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Teacher, behold, what manner of stones and what manner of buildings!
1As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, 'Teacher, look at these magnificent stones and these impressive buildings!'
2And Jesus said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left here one stone upon another, which shall not be thrown down.
2Jesus replied to him, 'Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on top of another; every single one will be torn down.'
3And as he sat on the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,
3Later, as Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,
4Tell us, when shall these things be? and whatshall bethe sign when these things are all about to be accomplished?
4'Tell us, when will these things happen? And what sign will show us that they are all about to be fulfilled?'
5And Jesus began to say unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray.
5Jesus began to tell them, 'Watch out that no one deceives you.'
6Many shall come in my name, saying, I am he; and shall lead many astray.
6'Many will come using my name, saying, "I am the one," and they will trick many people.'
7And when ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be not troubled: these things must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet.
7'When you hear about wars and reports of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.'
8For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there shall be earthquakes in divers places; there shall be famines: these things are the beginning of travail.
8'Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places and there will be famines. These things are just the beginning of the birth pains.'
9But take ye heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in synagogues shall ye be beaten; and before governors and kings shall ye stand for my sake, for a testimony unto them.
9'Be on your guard. People will hand you over to the local councils and beat you in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, to tell them the truth.'
10And the gospel must first be preached unto all the nations.
10'And the good news must first be preached to all nations.'
11And when they lead you to judgment, and deliver you up, be not anxious beforehand what ye shall speak: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye; for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit.
11'When they arrest you and put you on trial, do not worry ahead of time about what to say. Just say whatever words are given to you at that moment, because it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.'
12And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child; and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.
12'Brother will betray brother to death, and a father will betray his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.'
13And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.
13'Everyone will hate you because of me, but the person who stands firm to the end will be saved.'
14But when ye see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not (let him that readeth understand), then let them that are in Judæa flee unto the mountains:
14'When you see "the object that causes horizontal destruction" standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must run to the mountains.'
15and let him that is on the housetop not go down, nor enter in, to take anything out of his house:
15'A person on the roof of their house must not go down or enter the house to take anything out.'
16and let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloak.
16'A person in the field must not turn back to get their coat.'
17But woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days!
17'How terrible it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!'
19For those days shall be tribulation, such as there hath not been the like from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never shall be.
19'For those will be days of such terrible suffering that nothing like it has happened from the beginning of God’s creation until now, and nothing like it will ever happen again.'
20And except the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh would have been saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom he chose, he shortened the days.
20'If the Lord had not shortened that time, no one would survive. But for the sake of the people he has chosen, he shortened those days.'
21And then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Christ; or, Lo, there; believe it not:
21'At that time, if anyone says to you, "Look, here is the Messiah!" or "Look, there he is!", do not believe it.'
22for there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall show signs and wonders, that they may lead astray, if possible, the elect.
22'False messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive even the chosen people, if that were possible.'
23But take ye heed: behold, I have told you all things beforehand.
23'So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.'
24But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,
24'But in those days, after that time of suffering, the sun will grow dark and the moon will not give its light.'
25and the stars shall be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens shall be shaken.
25'The stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.'
26And then shall they see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
26'Then people will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.'
27And then shall he send forth the angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
27'And he will send out the angels to gather his chosen people from all four directions, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.'
28Now from the fig tree learn her parable: when her branch is now become tender, and putteth forth its leaves, ye know that the summer is nigh;
28'Learn a lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender and start to grow leaves, you know that summer is near.'
29even so ye also, when ye see these things coming to pass, know ye that he is nigh, even at the doors.
29'In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that the time is near, right at the door.'
30Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, until all these things be accomplished.
30'I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.'
31Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
31'Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.'
32But of that day or that hour knoweth no one, not even the angels in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
32'But no one knows the day or the hour when this will happen—not even the angels in heaven or the Son. Only the Father knows.'
33Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
33'Be on your guard! Stay alert and pray, because you do not know when that time will come.'
34It is as when a man, sojourning in another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, to each one his work, commanded also the porter to watch.
34'It is like a man going on a journey. He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, giving each one a specific job, and tells the doorkeeper to stay alert.'
35Watch therefore: for ye know not when the lord of the house cometh, whether at even, or at midnight, or at cockcrowing, or in the morning;
35'Therefore, stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming back. It could be in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at sunrise.'
