1Now shalt thou gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us; they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.
1Now gather your troops together, city of troops! A siege has been set against us; they will strike the judge of Israel on the cheek with a rod.
2But thou, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.
2But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, from you a ruler will come for me to lead Israel. His origins are from long ago, from ancient times.
3Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she who travaileth hath brought forth: then the residue of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
3Therefore, God will hand Israel over until the time when the woman in labor gives birth; then the rest of his brothers will return to join the people of Israel.
4And he shall stand, and shall feed his flock in the strength of Jehovah, in the majesty of the name of Jehovah his God: and they shall abide; for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
4He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for his greatness will reach the ends of the earth.
5And this man shall be our peace. When the Assyrian shall come into our land, and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.
5And he will be our peace. When the Assyrians invade our land and march through our fortresses, we will raise up seven shepherds against them, even eight leaders of men.
6And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: and he shall deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our border.
6They will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod at its very gates. He will rescue us from the Assyrians when they invade our land and cross our borders.
7And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples as dew from Jehovah, as showers upon the grass, that tarry not for man, nor wait for the sons of men.
7The survivors of Jacob will be among many nations like dew from the LORD, like rain on the grass, which does not wait for any man or depend on human beings.
8And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep; who, if he go through, treadeth down and teareth in pieces, and there is none to deliver.
8The survivors of Jacob will be among the nations and many peoples like a lion among the animals of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, who tramples and tears to pieces as he passes through, with no one to rescue them.
9Let thy hand be lifted up above thine adversaries, and let all thine enemies be cut off.
9Your hand will be lifted up in victory over your enemies, and all your foes will be destroyed.
10And it shall come to pass in that day, saith Jehovah, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and will destroy thy chariots:
10'In that day,' declares the LORD, 'I will take away your horses from you and destroy your chariots.
11and I will cut off the cities of thy land, and will throw down all thy strongholds.
11I will tear down the cities of your land and destroy all your fortresses.
12And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thy hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:
12I will stop your sorceries, and you will no longer have fortune-tellers.
13and I will cut off thy graven images and thy pillars out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thy hands;
13I will destroy your carved idols and your sacred pillars from among you; you will no longer worship the things your own hands have made.
