1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

1Then the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he afterward hungered.

2After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was very hungry.

3And the tempter came and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.

3The tempter came to him and said, 'If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.'

4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

4But Jesus answered, 'The Scripture says, "People do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."'

5Then the devil taketh him into the holy city; and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple,

5Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, and set him on the highest point of the temple.

6and saith unto him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and, On their hands they shall bear thee up, Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.

6'If you are the Son of God,' he said, 'jump off. For it is written: "He will order his angels to protect you," and "They will hold you up with their hands so you won't even graze your foot on a stone."'

7Jesus said unto him, Again it is written, Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God.

7Jesus answered him, 'It is also written: "Do not put the Lord your God to the test."'

8Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

8Next, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

9and he said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

9'I will give you all of this,' he said, 'if you will kneel down and worship me.'

10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

10Jesus said to him, 'Get away from me, Satan! For it is written: "You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him."'

11Then the devil leaveth him; and behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

11Then the devil left him, and angels came and took care of him.

12Now when he heard that John was delivered up, he withdrew into Galilee;

12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he went back to Galilee.

13and leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali:

13He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum, a town by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali.

14that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

14This happened to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah had Said:

15The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, Toward the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles,

15'The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, along the road by the sea, across the Jordan River—Galilee, where the Gentiles live—

16The people that sat in darkness Saw a great light, And to them that sat in the region and shadow of death, To them did light spring up.

16the people living in darkness have seen a great light. On those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.'

17From that time began Jesus to preach, and to say, Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

17From that time on, Jesus began to preach, 'Turn away from your sins, because the kingdom of heaven is near.'

18And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers.

18While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

19And he saith unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you fishers of men.

19'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will show you how to fish for people.'

20And they straightway left the nets, and followed him.

20Right away, they left their nets and followed him.

21And going on from thence he saw two other brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus called them, too.

22And they straightway left the boat and their father, and followed him.

22Immediately, they left the boat and their father and followed him.

23And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people.

23Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and sickness among the people.

24And the report of him went forth into all Syria: and they brought unto him all that were sick, holden with divers diseases and torments, possessed with demons, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed them.

24News about him spread all over Syria. People brought to him everyone who was sick with various diseases, those in great pain, those possessed by demons, those having seizures, and those who were paralyzed; and he healed them all.

25And there followed him great multitudes from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judæa and from beyond the Jordan.

25Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, Judea, and from the other side of the Jordan River.
