Matthew 2

1When Jesus therefore was born in Bethlehem of Juda, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem,

1And Jesus having been born in Beth-Lehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, lo, mages from the east came to Jerusalem,

1Now when the birth of Jesus took place in Beth-lehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2Saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and are come to adore him.

2saying, `Where is he who was born king of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and we came to bow to him.'

2Saying, Where is the King of the Jews whose birth has now taken place? We have seen his star in the east and have come to give him worship.

3And king Herod hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

3And Herod the king having heard, was stirred, and all Jerusalem with him,

3And when it came to the ears of Herod the king, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4And assembling together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where Christ should be born.

4and having gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he was inquiring from them where the Christ is born.

4And he got together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, questioning them as to where the birth-place of the Christ would be.

5But they said to him: In Bethlehem of Juda. For so it is written by the prophet:

5And they said to him, `In Beth-Lehem of Judea, for thus it hath been written through the prophet,

5And they said to him, In Beth-lehem of Judaea; for so it is said in the writings of the prophet,

6And thou Bethlehem the land of Juda art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come forth the captain that shall rule my people Israel.

6And thou, Beth-Lehem, the land of Judah, thou art by no means the least among the leaders of Judah, for out of thee shall come one leading, who shall feed My people Israel.'

6You Beth-lehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the chiefs of Judah: out of you will come a ruler, who will be the keeper of my people Israel.

7Then Herod, privately calling the wise men learned diligently of them the time of the star which appeared to them;

7Then Herod, privately having called the mages, did inquire exactly from them the time of the appearing star,

7Then Herod sent for the wise men privately, and put questions to them about what time the star had been seen.

8And sending them into Bethlehem, said: Go and diligently inquire after the child, and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I also may come and adore him.

8and having sent them to Beth-Lehem, he said, `Having gone--inquire ye exactly for the child, and whenever ye may have found, bring me back word, that I also having come may bow to him.'

8And he sent them to Beth-lehem and said, Go and make certain where the young child is; and when you have seen him, let me have news of it, so that I may come and give him worship.

9Who having heard the king, went their way; and behold the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, until it came and stood over where the child was.

9And they, having heard the king, departed, and lo, the star, that they did see in the east, did go before them, till, having come, it stood over where the child was.

9And after hearing the king, they went on their way; and the star which they saw in the east went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the young child was.

10And seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

10And having seen the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy,

10And when they saw the star they were full of joy.

11And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him: and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

11and having come to the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and having fallen down they bowed to him, and having opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh,

11And they came into the house, and saw the young child with Mary, his mother; and falling down on their faces they gave him worship; and from their store they gave him offerings of gold, perfume, and spices.

12And having received an answer in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back another way into their country.

12and having been divinely warned in a dream not to turn back unto Herod, through another way they withdrew to their own region.

12And it was made clear to them by God in a dream that they were not to go back to Herod; so they went into their country by another way.

13And after they were departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him.

13And on their having withdrawn, lo, a messenger of the Lord doth appear in a dream to Joseph, saying, `Having risen, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and be thou there till I may speak to thee, for Herod is about to seek the child to destroy him.'

13And when they had gone, an angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream, saying, Get up and take the young child and his mother, and go into Egypt, and do not go from there till I give you word; for Herod will be searching for the young child to put him to death.

14Who arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of Herod:

14And he, having risen, took the child and his mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,

14So he took the young child and his mother by night, and went into Egypt;

15That it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Out of Egypt have I called my son.

15and he was there till the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, `Out of Egypt I did call My Son.'

15And was there till the death of Herod; so that the word of the Lord through the prophet might come true, Out of Egypt have I sent for my son.

16Then Herod perceiving that he was deluded by the wise men, was exceeding angry: and sending killed all the menchildren that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

16Then Herod, having seen that he was deceived by the mages, was very wroth, and having sent forth, he slew all the male children in Beth-Lehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time that he inquired exactly from the mages.

16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was very angry; and he sent out, and put to death all the male children in Beth-lehem and in all the parts round about it, from two years old and under, acting on the knowledge which he had got with care from the wise men.

17Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying:

17Then the word of Jeremiah the prophet came true,

18A voice in Rama was heard, lamentation and great mourning; Rachel bewailing her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

18`A voice in Ramah was heard--lamentation and weeping and much mourning--Rachel weeping <FI>for<Fi> her children, and she would not be comforted because they are not.'

18In Ramah there was a sound of weeping and great sorrow, Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted for their loss.

19But when Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt,

19And Herod having died, lo, a messenger of the Lord in a dream doth appear to Joseph in Egypt,

19But when Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord came in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20Saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For they are dead that sought the life of the child.

20saying, `Having risen, take the child and his mother, and be going to the land of Israel, for they have died--those seeking the life of the child.'

20Saying, Get up and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: because they who were attempting to take the young child's life are dead.

21Who arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

21And he, having risen, took the child and his mother, and came to the land of Israel,

21And he got up, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22But hearing that Archclaus reigned in Judea in the room of Herod his father, he was afraid to go thither: and being warned in sleep retired into the quarters of Galilee.

22and having heard that Archelaus doth reign over Judea instead of Herod his father, he was afraid to go thither, and having been divinely warned in a dream, he withdrew to the parts of Galilee,

22But when it came to his ears that Archelaus was ruling over Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was in fear of going there; and God having given him news of the danger in a dream, he went out of the way into the country parts of Galilee.

23And coming he dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was said by the prophets: That he shall be called a Nazarene.

23and coming, he dwelt in a city named Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken through the prophets, that `A Nazarene he shall be called.'

23And he came and was living in a town named Nazareth: so that the word of the prophets might come true, He will be named a Nazarene.
